Die Orientgeschichte "Eine Befreiung" erschien zuerst 1894 als "Dritte Abtheilung" im Band "Die Rose von Kairwan" und wurde bereits von May selbst stark bearbeitet, indem er Thema und Personal der frühen Erzählung "Die Rose von Sokna" nutzte und durch Erweiterungen auf fast den vierfachen Umfang brachte.
