Something Jon should keep in mind -- OSX in general isn't shut out from commercial applications the way linux is, Windows isn't special in that regard. (And that really is the only problem with linux anyway. Granted it will be in the fabled Year of the Linux Desktop when that changes. ) |

So really, Windows is the overall easiest OS to use. I'll keep on saying it because it's true. Read MR and you'll see the number of issues under Linux & OS X are much more than under Windows. But to get back on topic, if you have a working key in the DRM removal tools, use Firefox with the Greasemonkey B&N download script and it brings back the download button B&N removed. I happen to pay close attention, being as I help those people 6 days a week on a fairly consistent basis. OSX shares the unix underpinnings of linux which make for a much smoother system than Windows, while simultaneously having a controlled OSware distribution like Windows -- I would expect it to always be more stable. |

A lot of OS X issues are when a new version is installed and some software doesn't work or the upgrade breaks things because Apple changed things. |

And those arent real issues? Oh, OK.
P.S. The number of times another Windows program clashes with calibre alone greatly outnumber the combined total of OSX and linux problems period. The culprit is usually the antivirus. That tells you something about Windows right there. Either way -- speaking from personal experience, calibre+linux is smooth sailing. It should be -- that is how Kovid uses it. Claiming that Windows has some intrinsic superiority for day-to-day use of calibre itself is something I have a hard time believing. It all depends on how you use it. Misuse of a computer is far more common on the most common OS -- Windows. End of story (and I'm not sure why there was one). Do stop repeating Windows Supremacy League propaganda, please. A legitimate point is that linux (but not OSX) suffers a dearth of commercial application support. For that reason alone, a Windows or OSX system is not unwise to have. Shkoyach. It's the only reason I have to keep a Windows box running. I have one commercial program that I need (for a hobby, but it's still a "need" for me) that doesn't have a Linux equivalent.

At any rate, you're probably right that B&N is now moving toward different keys per device/app. That might be the finally piece toward making their DRM like Kindle and Adobe with a number of devices limit. Or at least severely limit us getting our grubby paws on unlockable epub files. |

A very interesting comment appeared at Alf's last night. Someone calling themselves "Nobody you know" posted an url into which you plug in your B&N account email, password, and a random 16-byte hex number. It links to B&N and then gives you your encryption key. Curiosity got the better of me and I tried it. It worked. It gave me the same key which I found previously in Nookstudy (with the number 1 in front of it).

That is interesting. But after noting that that rather implies that B&N have NOT gone to a per-device encryption, I think I must put on my moderators hat and say:
Please remember that detailed discussion of DRM removal is not permitted at MobileRead. Just in case anyone is tempted to elaborate further. |

Interesting indeed. I can confirm that for me at least, BN is using different keys per device.
If it's okay to discuss details via PM, I'm happy to share findings that way. |

Hypothetically speaking; I could imagine an old-downloads-vs-brand-new-downloads situation giving rise to a per device theory that could be entirely imaginary.

I know my account currently has only one key. But I wonder if that URL would show more than one key if applicable or if it just taps into the same server that works with Nookstudy.

Yes, I understand the old-downloads-vs-brand-new-downloads situation. I don't think that's what's happening. I'm using clean software installs and fresh downloads for all tests.

At this point I have 2 active keys for newly downloaded books (which key works depends on the download method).
Based on what others have said, a hint given by "Nobody You Know," and more testing, this is what it's looking like to me: NookStudy for PC, Nook for PC, Nook for Mac, and greasemonkey downloads all use the same key. NookStudy for Mac uses a different key. I'm no longer convinced that BN is transitioning to different keys per device. I think it's just a NookStudy for Mac anomaly.
