Kindle for PC - new version for Windows 7/Vista/XP

There is a new version of Kindle for PC available for Windows 7 etc.

Not sure of the full extent of the changes but one very useful change for anyone reading Japanese etc is that it now supports VERTICAL text, and the page change buttons work as expected for this layout format.

Do "the tools" still work OK with it? That'll be the main thing everyone wants to know .

I have tried with this with Kindle Previewer 2.9.

I converted the sample epub3 format book

kusamakura-japanese-vertical-writing-20121124.epub

from

http://code.google.com/p/epub-samples/downloads/list

The book seems to read fine in PC kindle. As yet I haven't tried the latest kindlegen (2.9) itself.

I have Kindle for PC setup to auto update, yet it hasn't updated since 6/30/12. I downloaded the newest version and it said "Kindle Update" on the upper border and I went from version 1.10.0 (40252) to version 1.10.6 (40500). I guess the Kindle Update ain't working so good.

A worthy update. But I doubt accuracy of the japanese rendering (which I don't read BTW). I tried on different platforms and expectedly got quite different results. Kindle Previewer appears to me the most faithful.

[EDIT 2013-06-29 added KKv3.4 and Readium. Readium rendering seems faithful too.]

You're right about KindlePreviewer being the most faithful rendering. Its very like the appearance of the document on a Kindle PaperWhite. PC Kindle can be made to look a lot closer to that version by adjusting the font size, but then the text is really too small to read on a terminal screen.

The Tools are not Kindlegen or Kindlepreviewer. Those that use the Tools know exactly what they are. The Tools are for removing DRM.
