Contemporary Vote • September 2012
Help us choose the September 2012 selection to read for the MR Literary Club! The poll will be open for TWO days.
The vote is MULTIPLE CHOICE. You may vote for as many or as few as you like. The discussion thread will begin shortly after a winner is chosen (to discuss everything selection-related before, during and after reading). In the event of a tie, there will be a one-day non-multiple-choice run-off poll. In the event that the run-off poll also ends in a tie, the tie will be resolved in favour of the selection that received all of its initial nominations first. Select from the following works: True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey, 2001 Spoiler:
Lionel Asbo: State of England by Martin Amis, 2012 Spoiler:
On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan, 2007 Spoiler:
Black Swan Green by David Mitchell, 2006 Spoiler:

I was tempted to go with all of them, but then I may as well not have voted at all - so in the end I have left out Amis who is the one who appeals less to me - but I'll take it as a challenge to read it if it wins. I have already enjoyed The Kelly gang, which is difficult for a non-native speaker (well at least it was difficult for me ) and I had to read some passages alound to make sense of the meaning. I am not sure I'll re-read it, as I am still trying to catch up on the previuos months (only 20% of Middlemarch!), but it is still very vivid in my mind.
Either way, this is going to be a good month! |

The Ned Kelly book got some good reviews over here and the figure of the "Wild Colonial Boy" has become legendary. My other choice was Black Swan Green which sounds very interesting.

Black Swan Green sounds good so it got a vote, as well as On Chesil Beach which I'd be interested in discussing even though I've already read it.

I also could go for any or all of these, but I finally narrowed it down. I forewent Amis on the basis of price; I don't like to spend $13 for novels (the ebook price) and the local library doesn't have it yet. And then I decided that having read several of McEwan's novels already, I should pick something more different.
On the other hand, not only have I read nothing by Carey, it's also from a different country than I've read so far this year, and I'm tracking countries. And I read Mitchell's Thousand Autumns last year and loved it. So there you have it, but I'll happily procure and read whichever of the four wins. |

I felt the same as paola; any of the four would've been fine but since there's no sense in voting for them all I chose three of the four. Poor Lionel Asbo only ended up with one vote though; I voted early so I figured it'd get more seeing as it got four nomination votes, but I suppose there's always some interesting differences between nomination voting and poll voting.
Anyway, Black Swan Green it is! I'll start the discussion thread shortly. |

I'm traveling and missed the vote. The only one I wasn't interested in was On Chesil Beach. I just borrowed Black Swan Green from the library on my Sony T1 over the hotel wi-fi. Looks like I have something interesting to read on my cross-country flight home now!

Sorry, I can't take part this month, what with going up the Nile with Amelia Edwards and then plunging into The Aeneid in a couple of weeks' time.
I'll be interested to hear what you have to say about Black Swan Green. |

I'm happy with the Black Swan Green choice (been too busy snd forgot to vote in time), and will read Lionel Asbo anyway, being a Martin Amis fan.

Our local library ebook service is hopeless! I have never found a single book I have searched for. I also tried to get it via Kobo using a discount code, and that was not available either... /rant off.
