Kindle Question 2: Graphics
When I finally got to look at my Father's Kindle, which has on it books-of-books I've been making for him (using Mobipocket Creator) I noticed that some graphics weren't showing up.
If I had in my TOC, say, a List of Illustrations, with direct links to the illustrations (jpgs, gifs, or bmps), the link wouldn't go anywhere on the Kindle. This works fine in Mobi on my Pocket PC, which is how I thought it would work in the Kindle, but maybe not: Do the graphics at the end of the links need to be embedded in an html page, or are there only certains sizes or formats supported, or something else? Or did I not add them correctly in Mobi? Perplexed. -bjc |

As is often the case, I end up finding things out the hard way.
From the Amazon Kindle Forums, a post by their dtpadmin: http://forums.digitaltextplatform.co...1&categoryID=3 To make sure an image uploaded to DTP (referenced from HTML) shows up in the largest possible size, use the following formatting options: Images larger than 450 by 550 pixels are always re-sized by DTP Images inside content (i.e. referenced by HTML) need to be 64kb or smaller, otherwise they may get re-sized during the conversion process. Keep the image in an aspect ration of 9 to 11, which causes it to be re-sized to take up as much screen space as possible The 'Preview' application does not convert images for display accurately. This means that it will show larger images to be rotated or re-sized even if they aren't going to be changed in the final Kindle content. This is a known issue with the Preview. As long as your images conform to the rules above, they will remain unchanged as Kindle Editions. We'll see if that makes a difference....... -bjc |

The rules for MobiPocket Creator are different from Amazon's DTP (which seems to be sub-optimal for images). See Kindle Automatically Doubles Image Sizes.
Answering your original question, in the ebooks I have seen it is usual to embed the images into the body of the text, e.g.: Code:
<div align="center"><img src="0001.jpg"/></div> |

Here are a couple of threads you might want to check out where we (mostly wallcraft) played with images for the Kindle.

Would someone with a Kindle please give The Rebirth of Pan by Jo Walton a try to see if the graphics work please? The cover image is 500x615 and I'd like to know if it works. Thanks.

quality
you can get even better quality if you size 600x800 (for my testing for pictures/comics) and set it to 4color scale gray in photoshop
