Pirandello, Luigi: Six Characters in Search of an Author, v.1, 21 Feb 2008
From the Wikipedia:
Luigi Pirandello (June 28, 1867 – December 10, 1936), an Italian dramatist, novelist, and short story writer awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934. In 1921, the Compagnia di Dario Niccomedi staged, at the Valle di Roma, the play, Sei Personaggi in Cerca d'Autore, Six Characters in Search of an Author. It was a clamorous failure. The public split up into supporters and adversaries, the latter of whom shouted: "Asylum, asylum!" The author, who was present at the representation with his daughter Lietta, was forced to almost literally run out of the theatre through a side exit in order to avoid the crowd of enemies. The same drama, however, was a great success when presented at Milan. This work is assumed to be in the Life+70 public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution. I hope it is. The english translation was published in 1922 so I assume it's fair game. But it, like a few other things I've posted, aren't at Project Gutenberg. I'm just hoping I've not done something wrong. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. I remember seeing it performed when I was in school a long time ago and had completely forgotten about it. I only remember that it was one bizarre play!

I don't remember now. I just Googled it and found several copies of the 1922 English translation posted and all by the same translator.
