word wrap issues on Kindle from .txt

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and to calibre, I apologize if this question has been answered before.

I am trying to get a .txt download from Project Gutenberg Australia onto my Kindle 3. I can get the file

http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks01/0100201.txt

loaded into calibre and from there to my Kindle 3, but no matter what I do original line breaks from the .txt source file get passed all the way through to my Kindle. Each line is a word or two too long to fit on a single Kindle line and so I get text that looks like this on the Kindle:

It was in the Fall of nineteen seventeen at an officers'
training camp
that I first became acquainted with John Carter, War Lord
of Barsoom,
through the pages of your novel "A Princess of Mars." The story
made a
profound impression upon me and while my better judgment
assured me

Very unreadable! I have tried loading the file to the Kindle in its original txt format as well as using calibre to convert it to MOBI with a variety of different text justification settings from the Look&Feel dialog, but nothing I do gets rid of these awful word wraps.

This has got to be a very common task I should think. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

The setting you need for this particular TXT file, when converting TXT to MOBI, in Convert - TXTInput, set ParagraphStyle to block. This means "treat a blank line as a paragraph break".

Text handling 'just' changed in Calibre 7.38, so the instructions on how to handle this are slightly different based on the code you're using. 7.38 just added an 'auto' mode, which should work, if it's not, go into the text input options and choose 'block'.

If you're using 7.37 then the defaults should match your book. Did you change from the text input defaults? You would need the 'single line paragraphs' option disabled.

Thanks all, the block paragraph change worked!

One followup question: when I filled in the book metadata I entered the author as 'Edgar Rice Burroughs' and the author sort as 'Burroughs, Edgar Rice'. However, after loading onto the Kindle it appears in my home page sorted by author on E rather than B. Anybody know how to fix this?

Thanks!

Since the 0.7.38 release I've tweak the auto detect for paragraph type. Auto now detects this text as block properly.

i have same problem and the solutions posted don't work

Hi There

I have the same problem as the OP.

I am trying to convert a txt book file to mobi to put on my kindle version 2.

I use caliber to convert and it still gives me these annoying line breaks.

I have tried the other solutions with using block mode also tried auto mode and doesn't fix.

I have tried using heuristics to unwrap and doesn't fix.

HELP !!!!

Here is what the text looks like after convert.

Can't really say without seeing the file but auto and auto should be fine if you go one or two versions back.
