What is this in the left column?

what does "main (9 books)" mean? does it have to do with how my Kindle groups this periodical? does this mean that my periodicals are being broken up?

That would mean that you have 9 books/periodicals with same name as far as calibre is concerned.

As far as I know, no. The screenshot you posted would show 14 books.

OnDevice view does not group, Calibre is just looking AT the device

It will depend on the metadata in those entries. Matching is not done by title alone. And it wont affect grouping on your kindle that is done by te kindle firmware, and not calibre.

thanks, kovid. any advice on how to edit meta-data so that both calibre matches (what I'm looking at in the screenshot?) and Kindle groups (the clusters I see on my device?) correctly?

You can use the match books tool to match the books on the device to books in the library then their metadata will come from the library and should group correctly automatically.
