Move book from kindle

If I could please jump in to add a small question.. When files are copied from the Kindle to Calibre, are the BOOKNAME.sdr files copied over to? I believe the files in this folder hold all the "current location" info and your notes and stuff. In other words, if I'm 50% through a book when I copy it from the Kindle to Calibre, erase the Kindle, and then copy from Calibre back over to my Kindle, will it still know I'm at 50%?

Thanks!

I'm sorry, but it was not my intention to hijack anyone's thread, and I don't "go around" doing so. I felt my question *was* related, otherwise I would have opened a new thread. The original question was asking how to copy files from the Kindle to Calibre. I wanted to know if Calibre copied the "last position", bookmarks and notes which I *believe* are stored in a folder with the extension ".sdr. I fail to see how that how that is unrelated.

But you're right, it *is* a different question. Going forward, I will always open a new thread to ask a question regardless of how related I perceive it to be.

Thanks for the pointer.

Thank you! I wonder if he considers feature requests. I'll go look for a category.

I was rather hoping Calibre could be used for a complete backup of my device, and allow me to migrate everything (notes & bookmarks included) to a new device using a sync feature instead of just moving files around in Finder.

Thanks again!

Amazon (Cloud) does it for Kindles

Worms.
Can of

Then:
Why doesn't calibre convert my ADE bookmarks/position to my Kindle (or 1 of any 2000 other devices)?

Yep -- calibre does not support syncing annotation info for numerous competing and incompatible schemes. Although Kovid does accept feature requests (see the bug reporting page on calibre's website), I don't believe he will be willing to implement this. It is far more work than it sounds like to do properly.

FWIW, I use a custom rsync script to keep my Kindle backed up, annotations and all. Restoring that to a new Kindle should work just fine, as will restoring to a reset Kindle.
Scripting things often allows for greater control than pre-packaged solutions.

I'm not even sure you're still active here or not, but I had to reply. I never saw your post, having lost all my tabs during an unfortunate computer self-immolation shortly after writing here.

Anyhow, I wanted to thank you! I also speak rsync, and while that is not what I needed for my solution, it made me realize I can recover from issues simply by restoring a backup, which I make by simply dragging 'documents' off to a dated directory on my mac, but I now realize rsync would be more efficient.

I don't need Calibre to save the sidecar (.sdr) folders because *I* can. And now that I know how complicated that folder is, I can see why Kovid avoids the whole issue like the plague!

Anyway, thanks again.... if you're still out there!
