I once checked what the "official" position on calling earth is (and found info for both earth and moon)
because the rest of our planets is called by names of the Roman pantheon and some s/f uses Gaia or Terra for Earth. (wich is both wrong: a) "Terra" is landmass or soil, thus opposed to sea, i.e. mare b) Gaia is the "right" supernatural being, but in Greek, in Roman it would be Tellus for Earth) the official position is, both our planet and its moon is named "Earth" and "Moon" in the language used to do so. (so moon is luna only in languages where it has this meaning) the conclusion is that moonborn would be named 'moon'+groupsuffix in each of our planetary languages: en: moonians de: Mondlinge pl: księrzycowcy etc. Selenians ar out by the same reasons Gaia is: Selene is Greek. I know it sounds dry, but is to my knowledge the linguistically correct answer. |
