KPW 6th Gen will not reset or update...
Help, I am nearly at the end of my tether with my KPW 6th Gen.
It started when I downloaded Terry Pratchett’s Shepherd’s Crown. I would be reading the book when I would suddenly get ‘Device Error – This happens when you unplug the device from a computer without ejecting…….’ I have tried resetting my device MANY times, but when it restarts, nothing is changed. I checked my firmware and saw that I was still on 5.6.5, so I thought I would try manually updating to the latest update. When I connected to my PC to copy over the downloaded update, I noticed there was a file on the device update.bin.tmp.partial, which suggested to me that the device was in the process of updating, so I plugged it in and left it overnight, but in the morning Update Your Kindle was greyed out. So I went back to my PC deleted the partial update copied over the download, then went to update my device, which was now an available option. The device cycled through the startup procedure, but, nothing had changed, still the same as before and the partial file had re-appeared! I have tried resetting again to no avail. In desperation I deleted all my books, signed out, disconnected from wifi and reset the device, but when it restarted, all my books were back, I was still signed in and connected to the wifi, WTF. I have also tried the DO_FACTORY_RESTORE file trick, but again the device does not restore. I have tried the lockscreen 111222777 combo, but no joy. As a final option I tried the JB, said it was successful, but when I restart everything is back as before. Am I missing something? Please someone help |

How old is your device? If it's still under warranty I'd recommend that you contact Kindle Customer Service. You've taken all the sensible steps to resolve the issue yourself.

Unfortunately it's out of warranty, looking more than likely I will have to buy a new one, but I hate being beaten😞

Have you tried doing a Factory Reset from the device itself? Using the menu item for it, that is?

Make sure it is fully charged. Unplug it to restart or restore.
Be sure and hold the power button for about 40 seconds. And do call Amazon or more precisely have them call you. It might at least get you a discount on the next one. |

Have you jailbroken? Have you installed some kind of firewall or anti update measure in the past?

No never tried jailbreaking until yesterday, did it in desperation really. Just can't figure out why it refuses to reset.

It is seriously not normal for deleted files to come back after a reboot -- it means the device was incapable of actually writing the changes to disk, and those changes persisted only in the write cache etc. Sounds like your Kindle is toast. |

Yep, that's what I suspected (that it's toast, not the technical part 😏, ah well it's my birthday next month....

Well, if you crave more technical details, I think the FGA (Frequently Given Answers) by @knc1 mentions this.
