Crowdfunding: E-ink dev board & SDK with screens up to 9.7"

05:09 AM by KevinShort in E-Book General | News

The same group of people who started the campaign to fund an E-ink Monitor / Ebook Reader have come up with another idea: an E-ink-compatible board just for developers.

The new Indiegogo campaign has been set up so that you can pick from a variety of displays. There's the standard 6" display with or without capacitive touch and/or a frontlight, and they also have grayscale 9.7" and color 8" E-ink displays. If you don't care about electronic paper, you can also choose a 7" LCD with touch.

The board itself has a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, 512MB of DDR3 RAM, 4GB flash memory, Wi-Fi, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a speaker, USB host and OTG support, and HDMI output.

Now, I do quite a bit of tinkering with my Kobo devices, and I'm quite happy with how hackable they are. But If I had the extra cash I'd seriously consider getting myself one or two of these dev boards

Adobe Hacked: Customer Info Stolen

02:48 AM by 49Kat in E-Book General | News

Adobe has had encrypted customer info stolen from their servers, including Adobe ID passwords and credit card details. Those affected should receive email from Adobe about what precautions to take.

As a precaution, we are resetting relevant customer passwords to help prevent unauthorized access to Adobe ID accounts. If your user ID and password were involved, you will receive an email notification from us with information on how to change your password. We also recommend that you change your passwords on any website where you may have used the same user ID and password.

For those of us who use ADE...I got the email this evening.

Public Library Zinio access now has back issues

05:39 AM by jehane in E-Book General | News

I went to checkout a couple of my regular magazines from two public libraries that I belong to, to discover that there are now back issues available. Good, since I missed a week recently.

However both the search and categories seem to be broken, not to mention the categories changed so I had to page through until I found my magazines of choice.

06:14 AM by owly in E-Book General | News

From the Library Journal "The newest edition of Global eBook: A Report on Market Trends and Developments has been published by Rudiger Wischenbart Content & Consulting. First released in fall 2011, the new edition features the most recent market developments in countries with well-established e-book businesses such as the U.S. and U.K. as well as in countries with newer e-book operations including Germany, China, Brazil, India and Russia.

The Global eBook report documents and analyses how ebook markets emerge in the US, UK, continental Europe, Brazil, China, India, Russia and the Arab world. It combines the best available data and references to specialized local actors, with thematic chapters, focusing on critical policy debates and on key driving forces, notably ebook bestsellers and pricing strategies across European markets, self-publishing, government regulation, piracy, and the expanding impact of global players."

HarperCollins Pursues E-Book Subscription Service With Scribd
By JULIE BOSMAN
Published: October 1, 2013

HarperCollins is the latest publisher to tinker with a Netflix-style e-book subscription service, announcing on Tuesday that it has struck a deal to make its backlist books available on Scribd, a Web site for sharing documents and books.

Scribd, with a generous base of 80 million visitors to its site each month, said it was positioned to become a prominent e-book subscription service, in which consumers pay a flat monthly fee and receive access to a large catalog of e-books in exchange.

Brian Murray, the chief executive of HarperCollins, said he was encouraged to sign on partly because of consumer interest in subscription models for music, television and radio. The idea has been circulating in publishing for years, but it has generated little traction so far. Oysterbooks.com, a venture introduced last month, offers consumers access to more than 100,000 books for a monthly fee of $9.95.
