New Sony Multimedia Clie: PEG-VZ90

10:31 AM by Colin Dunstan in Archive | Portable Audio/Video

Sony Clie's are not dead yet. At least in Japan.

The Register brings the news: Sony unveils Wi-Fi multimedia Clie.

Sony will next week ship its most impressive Clié PDA yet. The PEG-VZ90 multimedia handheld features not only a slick sliding control panel, but Wi-Fi wireless connectivity and a stunning 3.8in 480 x 320 OLED screen. The display provides a contrast ratio of 1000:1, a fast response time and a 180-degree horizontal viewing angle, Sony said[...]The handheld is based on Palm OS 5.2.1 and contains Sony's Clié Organiser PIM apps. The device is driven by Sony's own 123MHz ARM-compatible CPU, the Handheld Engine. Inside is 64MB of RAM, 40MB of which is available to the user, along with 128MB of Flash ROM, 95MB of which can be used for data storage.

The sad part: It is very unlikely that we'll see a non-Japanese version of this device (it is probably no news to you that Sony has abandoned the US and the European PDA markets).

Update 1: If you happen to understand Japanese, you can visit the PEG-VZ90 product page and read Sony's official press-release.

Oxford English Dictionary (2nd Ed.) PDA-friendly

06:32 AM by Alexander Turcic in Archive | Mobile Sites

I needed mobile access to OED for a project I am currently working on.

You can query the Oxford English Dictionary with your PDA from the following link:

Mobileread OED Lookup

In case you didn't know: The Oxford English Dictionary is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery books.

Win an ipaq by taking a survey

09:14 PM by cbarnett in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

SPB Software House is currently running a survey to determine the wants and needs of PPC users. As an incentive to participate, all those responding to the survey woll be placed in the draw to win an iPaq hx4700, or three $100 certificates from PocketGear.

The survey and offer is open to international participants, and closes September 17th.

One thing - in the small print, they promise delivery of the 4700 within one month of the devices release. It hasn't been released to the general public yet, but by all accounts is a very nice pda.

Review of the new Ipaq h6315

08:51 PM by cbarnett in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

iPaqHQ have posted a review of the newest iPaq from HP to be release, the h6315.

It's an interesting device and diverges from past offerings from HP, as it's a smartphone running Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition. It also has bluetooth, wifi and a built-in camera. Whether HP can successfully break into the coverged device market remains to be seen, but they certainly seem to be making the effort.
