NIST recommended: PDA Forensic Tools

09:58 AM by Colin Dunstan in Miscellaneous | Lounge

When handheld devices are involved in a crime or other incident, forensic examiners require tools that allow the proper retrieval and speedy examination of information present on the device.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has now published the paper "PDA Forensic Tools: An Overview and Analysis". This report gives an overview of current forensic software, designed for acquisition, analysis, reporting of data discovered on PDAs, and an understanding of their capabilities and limitations.

A VERY interesting technical 60+ pages read. I find it amazing what they can find out about you and your PDA with present day forensic software tools.

BookCrossing: Stray Books up for Adoption

09:31 AM by Colin Dunstan in E-Book General | Deals and Resources (No...

Today I stumbled over BookCrossing. Part book club, part behavioral study, part note-in-a-bottle experience, BookCrossing encourages people to experience what it terms "the karma of literature" by registering books at the site and then depositing them in public places, like coffee shops, airplane seat pockets and park benches.

Has anyone of you actually tried if this really works? Somehow I would feel strange leaving my books behind in the wild...

palmOne faces a problem - it's called Europe

06:03 AM by Colin Dunstan in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

eWeek features an interesting article which tries to explain why palmOne has been losing considerable market share in the European market.

At least in Europe, the Treo has been a failure. Officially, palmOne is trying to fend off the problem. According to a report on forbes.com, "Mark Hodgson, PalmOne's UK smartphone channel development manager, said: 'Because of the success of the Treo 600 in the US, our supplies have been limited. The smartphone is a mass-market device, but the Treo appeals to business.'"

What is Hodgson trying to tell us? That people in Europe are not interested in business, or that palmOne is simply lacking the resource to expand? Either way, this is definitely not a good sign!

Automatic Gmail invite spooler

03:46 PM by ignatz in Miscellaneous | Lounge

Gmail is only barely invite only these days and pretty much everyone who wants an invite has one. But if you still need one head over to isnoop and add your name to the list. And if you have extra invites, send them to gmail@isnoop.net and they will be added to the pile. Good idea, as lord knows we can hardly give away invites anymore...

Toshiba e830 released: but not in the US!?!

02:35 PM by ignatz in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

Pocket PC Thoughts is reporting that the new VGA Toshiba e830 has been released in Japan and the EU but will not be released in the US at this time! Is the US the new red-headed stepchild of the PPC market? What gives? On all the PPC forums users are slavering and drooling to get their hands on VGA units. Why would this huge market be skipped over?

Sunrise 0.3.1 released

12:31 PM by Laurens in Archive | Sunrise

I just released Sunrise 0.3.1. You can now invoke "Send to Sunrise" from within Internet Explorer. I don't use IE as my main browser, but indirectly I use it through FeedDemon, which uses IE as an embedded control. I can now read news articles and immediately send them to Sunrise!

This version also adds support for basic authentication. This lets you access password-protected sites.

New Sony Multimedia Clie: PEG-VZ90

09:31 AM by Colin Dunstan in Archive | Portable Audio/Video

Sony Clie's are not dead yet. At least in Japan.

The Register brings the news: Sony unveils Wi-Fi multimedia Clie.

Sony will next week ship its most impressive Clié PDA yet. The PEG-VZ90 multimedia handheld features not only a slick sliding control panel, but Wi-Fi wireless connectivity and a stunning 3.8in 480 x 320 OLED screen. The display provides a contrast ratio of 1000:1, a fast response time and a 180-degree horizontal viewing angle, Sony said[...]The handheld is based on Palm OS 5.2.1 and contains Sony's Clié Organiser PIM apps. The device is driven by Sony's own 123MHz ARM-compatible CPU, the Handheld Engine. Inside is 64MB of RAM, 40MB of which is available to the user, along with 128MB of Flash ROM, 95MB of which can be used for data storage.

The sad part: It is very unlikely that we'll see a non-Japanese version of this device (it is probably no news to you that Sony has abandoned the US and the European PDA markets).

Update 1: If you happen to understand Japanese, you can visit the PEG-VZ90 product page and read Sony's official press-release.
