"A Very Bad Quarter for the Palm OS"

02:58 PM by Laurens in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

Worldwide Handheld Market Up Over 13 Percent (Brighthand)

According to Gartner Dataquest, shipments of Palm OS handhelds in the third quarter of 2004 were about 25 percent lower than the worst previous quarter since 1999.

Shipments of Palm OS handhelds are on track to decline about 23 percent this year, to about 4.4 million units.

This doesn't look good at all.

With UniFi-1, WiFi in PDAs soon standard?

10:28 AM by Colin Dunstan in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

Although I share your disappointment that palmOne decided against integrating WiFi in its latest Tungsten T5, I can guarantee you that we have some bright times ahead of us!

Inquirer reports today a British company called CSR PLC (LSE:CSR) developed UniFi-1, the first single chip WiFi solution for the embedded device market (camera, MP3 player, PDA, Smartphone, ...).

What is really great about this chip is that all the relevant software runs on a seperate RISC processor, which means no processing power is taken away from the device's main CPU. Better still, the chip comes for the low wholesale price of $6.96 for the 802.11 b/g version or $9.98 for the a/b/g version. And, according to CTO James Collier, you should be able to run Bluetooth, GPRS and WiFi at the same time!

To get more info, you can read the official press release statement.

The future belongs to WiFi!

Firefox 1.0 released today!

02:58 PM by divajess in Miscellaneous | Lounge

The latest and greatest, retail-ready 1.0 version of Mozilla's Firefox browser is available today! According to its home page, Firefox empowers you to browse faster, more safely and more efficiently than with any other browser. Firefox 1.0 is available now for Windows, Linux, and Mac. Get it directly from the Mozilla.org FTP server!

I'm a Firefox devotee (just upgraded from the Firefox 1.0 Preview version this morning), because I love A) security, B) tabbed browsing, and most of all, C) all the great extensions that really make Firefox functional and unique! If you haven't tried Firefox, I highly suggest giving it a whirl.

Earthcomber

12:20 PM by sUnShInE in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

I just came across a new Palm application that notes mentioning. Earthcomber is a free "virtual treasure map" for Palm devices that provides location-based information and notifies you when you are in range of your personal favorites.

Best utilized with a Bluetooth GPS receiver or Smartphone, it can also work for offline PDA's by telling the map where you are. Earthcomber notifies you when you are within range of favorite stores, services, attractions, libraries, post offices, shopping malls, hospitals -- essentially whatever spot you tell it you're interested in. You can select from their pre-existing lists, or add your own. Over 1.2 million U.S. points of interest are mapped, and more are added each day by content partners and by advertisers that purchase listings.

Earthcomber is spam-free, and with it you determine what info you want to receive and that which you don't. You can search for favorites from .2 miles all the way up to 100 miles away.

Unlike similar applications, Earthcomber can work from external media. Plus, users choose what maps they wish to carry. Check out the user guide for more info and get ready to start combing.
