Richard from Read/Write Web

11:18 PM by ricmac in Miscellaneous | Introduce Yourself

Hi all,

I've been lurking at MobileRead for a few months now and posting every now and then. But now that my blog is featured on the MobileRead frontpage, I better introduce myself formally

I have a Palm T2 currently and I use it mostly to read blogs offline, but also to read eBooks. I've just purchased my first eBook (although I've read several free ones).

Up till recently I ran a blog called eBook Culture that was focused exclusively on eBooks. But I've now merged that with my main blog Read/Write Web. I write mostly about Web Technology on Read/Write Web, but writing and electronic publishing are two of my core interests. So expect to see lots more posts about eBooks on R/WW in future!

I look forward to conversing with you all on MobileRead

[Editor's Note: We're delighted to have Richard with us in this MobileRead community, just as we are happy when each and every one of you takes the time to participate, or even if you just make frequent visits to read a few posts. There's a boatload of great content out there on the web, so it's an honor when people take the time to stay in touch with us here.

As Richard has some really awesome content on his site that's wonderfully tied to the subjects discussed at MobileRead.com on a daily basis, we've taken this opportunity to highlight his introduction here on our front page.

I hope you'll take a moment to browse Read/Write Web. You'll probably find yourself placing it on your bookmarks list. And in the future, we look forward to having an occassional opportunity to share some of his writing on MobileRead, which I hope will both be a pleasure and a reminder for us all to keep an eye on his site.]

Futuristic Mobile Computing Display

08:28 PM by Bob Russell in E-Book General | News

Imagine the possibilities of a small headset that provides a virtual 10" screen in front of you. A full-sized screen display no matter how small your PDA or smart phone becomes. Carry a 10" TV and movie viewer in your purse or backpack.

While there have been some similar kinds of display technologies in the past, this comfortable headset is approaching practicality at an expected price of only about $400.

Read more, see a video, and dream a little about the possibilities...

Revenge on Scammers

08:12 PM by Bob Russell in Miscellaneous | Lounge

One gal has decided that enough is enough. After one too many scams headed her way, she began to get some revenge without leaving the comfort of her horse farm in Illinois.

Instead of just ignoring the scammers, she decided to fight back. Partly to waste their time and money, and partly to increase awareness of the kinds of scams going on. She wants to help others to be aware of their schemes and hopefully she'll reduce their effectiveness.

But for us, it leaves a trail of funny exchanges with the money grubbing cheats. You can't help but cheer for them to waste money on expedited shipping costs to send their fake cashier's checks, and even to imagine their frustration when they find out they've been had and they don't get to steal anyone's money.

You can find all the scoop here... http://www.bustedupcowgirl.com/scampage.html

And as a bonus, if you are in the middle of an exchange with a scammer, you are even invited to call her for advice!

And Now: A Treo Store

04:53 PM by sUnShInE in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

Can't get enough of the new Treo's? palmOne is banking that they've been so popular that they gave the smartphone its own store. The first ever Treo Store opened on Monday at the Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, California and will complement the other palmOne retail stores located in the same mall -- featuring the Zire and Tungsten handhelds.

In addition to the Treo Store in the Valley Fair mall, there are now 13 palmOne stores located in malls and airports nationwide that carry the full line of palmOne products and accessories. palmOne has reported sales through their existing retail stores have grown 595% year-over-year (Q1 FY04 to Q1 FY05), and they expect high traffic in the mall-based retail stores during this holiday season.

palmOne also kicked off a new TV advertising campaign, with commercials highlighting the Treo line and Tungsten E , which are now airing in select US markets. Check 'em out at palmOneTV.

Bluetooth Networking with Treo against Sprint's will

03:17 PM by Alexander Turcic in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

A guy named shadowmite released a 2-byte patch for those frustrated Sprint users who weren't able to use the Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (DUN) profile on their Treo 650.

As a reminder: Sprint decided for unknown reasons to cripple the use of Bluetooth on the new Treo 650 for laptop Internet access. Now it is quite obvious that the reason was not of technical nature, otherwise how could it have been "fixed" by merely changing two bytes?

Here is how to install the patched file (as explained by a Treocentral user):
1. Turn off Bluetooth on the Treo
2. Soft reset (a precaution).
3. Use the install tool on your computer to install the patched file. Hotsync.
4. Soft reset your Treo (just in case).
5. Start Bluetooth and turn Dial-up Networking on.

Tribute To James Grady Kendrick

08:01 PM by Bob Russell in Miscellaneous | Lounge

I sadly take this opportunity to note the passing of James Grady Kendrick, father of James Kendrick our friend from the excellent jkontherun blog.

In his writing, (son) James has demonstrated a special talent for communicating his insights into both technology and life. Today he shares that talent with us in a tribute to his father's life and legacy at http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkonther...e_to_a_gr.html

Please consider stopping by to visit this tribute, and to offer your condolences and prayers. I guarantee this glimpse at one man's life will touch you in a special way.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, son James. Thank you for sharing with us.

BetaPlayer gets a boost with Axim X50v

06:41 PM by Alexander Turcic in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

Picard (my new hero) has just released a closed-source plugin for Betaplayer which utilizes the new Intel 2700G Video decoder of Dell's Axim X50v.

To use it, you must first install BetaPlayer 0.093g; then install the Intel 2700G plugin.

Once the new player and the plugin are installed, you should have two new video options. Use 'Intel 2700G Decoder' to accelerate mpeg1 and mpeg4 decoding. With this decoder, I had a benchmark of over 200% (compared to 130% without using the plugin). What makes the plugin so great is that Axim X50v users can now lower CPU speed to save valuable battery power.
