See the best of FreewarePPC

07:10 PM by Bob Russell in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

Jonathan Aquino has extracted the program comments and ratings from the site to give a glimpse at the best of the software available.

Check it out at Johathan Aquino's Mental Garden.

Note also that Palm has more software available, and bragging rights...

FreewarePalm lists 6277 freeware programs
FreewarePPC lists 1025 freeware programs
That's about 6 times as much software for PalmOS than PPC!

Pocket Informant 5 Review at PDA247

05:05 AM by Alexander Turcic in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

Neil Brown wrote an in-depth review of Pocket Informant 5, (in my opinion) the best PIM software for Pocket PC. His conclusion:

As usual, I am not going to mince my words- download this application now. HP made an excellent decision by including this in the iPAQ 4700 ROM, and, if you place any reliance on the PocketOutlook tools, I am certain that you will obtain benefit from PocketInformant. The sheer number of options available is overwhelming, and many of these are incredibly useful- for me, the crunch test was whether I would become more organised through using this software, and, yes I did. I found the PocketOutlook method positively clunky after experiencing the interface of PI, and the ability to see appointment details in month view is invaluable. Overall, I am full of praise for this application- it does everything that it says it will, and more besides. I urge you to download the trial- but do be prepared to purchase the full version as a result. Highly recommended.

Hack a day

06:49 PM by Francesco in Miscellaneous | Lounge

Today I discovered this wonderful site for geeks. I mean, IF a geek ever comes to MobileRead.

The name is Hack a Day and you can find it here:
http://www.hackaday.com/

What's in there? Well, mostly tips to modify the inteded behaviour of your electronic devices, a.k.a. hacks.
Also you might find how to build your own (monster) gadgets, or news about hacks done by experts that might one day benefit you.

A few examples are:
- get your sprint treo 650 to work on verizon (http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000493023729/)
- make your own dance dance revolution mat (http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000910023874/)
- project nitro, using your nintendo ds over the web (http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000533024456/)

And a special (but not so impressive, though) hack for our admin, and some of the people who has yielded to the temptations of the dark side:
- enable dell x50 series pocket pc secret software (http://handhelds.hackaday.com/entry/1234000540023314/)

Sorry for the lousy formatting. But... I just don't feel like doing it right!

Be sure to check the index to find hacks related to your most beloved device.
