Newbie cannot connect Paperwhite to Calibre
Hello all,
I am a newbie to the forum and hope that you may be able to help me... I have been using Calibre and Kindle Paperwhites for years with no problem. Now I get the following error on all computers and Paperwhites: =============== ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device Failed to access files in the main memory of your device. You should contact the device manufacturer for support. Common fixes are: try a different USB cable/USB port on your computer. If you device has a "Reset to factory defaults" type of setting somewhere, use it. Underlying error: [Errno 13] Permission denied: 'V:\\driveinfo.calibre' Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 89, in run File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 472, in _get_device_information File "site-packages\calibre\devices\usbms\driver.py", line 160, in get_device_information IOError: Failed to access files in the main memory of your device. You should contact the device manufacturer for support. Common fixes are: try a different USB cable/USB port on your computer. If you device has a "Reset to factory defaults" type of setting somewhere, use it. Underlying error: [Errno 13] Permission denied: 'V:\\driveinfo.calibre' =============== I have reset four paperwhites, changed several USB Cables, and updated Calibre on several Windows 7 and Windows 10 computers. The Kindle is visible and accessable as a drive in Windows. All Paperwhites work normally and wireless is fine. I just can't connect the Paperwhite to Calibre in order to transfer books from my libraries to the Kindle. Any ideas? Help! |

Most likely there are too many files on the root of your kindle drive or the permissions on the files/folders are incorrect. Both of those can cause a permissions error. Another possibility is some antivirus/security program is blocking access, which you can eliminate by rebooting windows in safe mode and trying there.

Status update:
Still unable to view the paper white device via usb connection to Calibre. Same error message testing from multiple windows 7/10 computers, usb cables, Kindle paper white devices and Calibre versions. I have discovered that I can manually select a book from a Calibre library and send it to the usb connected Paper white "main memory". The book is stored and readable on the paper white. Has anyone experienced this type of problem? Any ideas how to fix this problem? |

reset your kindle or correct the permissions on the file indicated in the error message yourself.

I can't see my USB attached kindle paperwhite on my PC.
Calibre can't see it either. I ran the debug device detection and got the following: ----------- calibre 5.17 embedded-python: True is64bit: False Windows-10-10.0.19041 Windows ('32bit', 'WindowsPE') 32bit process running on 64bit windows ('Windows', '10', '10.0.19041') Python 3.8.5 Windows: ('10', '10.0.19041', '', 'Multiprocessor Free') Interface language: en_GB USB devices on system: (USBDevice(vendor_id=0x806 product_id=0x806 bcd=0x717 devid=usb\vid_0806&pid_0806&rev_0717 devinst=6), USBDevice(vendor_id=0x3f0 product_id=0x94a bcd=0x100 devid=usb\vid_03f0&pid_094a&rev_0100 devinst=7), USBDevice(vendor_id=0x2109 product_id=0x715 bcd=0x0 devid=usb\vid_2109&pid_0715&rev_0000 devinst=8), USBDevice(vendor_id=0x1a2c product_id=0x4c5e bcd=0x110 devid=usb\vid_1a2c&pid_4c5e&rev_0110&mi_00 devinst=9), USBDevice(vendor_id=0x1a2c product_id=0x4c5e bcd=0x110 devid=usb\vid_1a2c&pid_4c5e&rev_0110 devinst=10), USBDevice(vendor_id=0x806 product_id=0x806 bcd=0x717 devid=usb\vid_0806&pid_0806&rev_0717&mi_00 devinst=11), USBDevice(vendor_id=0x1a2c product_id=0x4c5e bcd=0x110 devid=usb\vid_1a2c&pid_4c5e&rev_0110&mi_01 devinst=12), USBDevice(vendor_id=None product_id=None bcd=None devid=usb\root_hub30&vid8086&pida36d&rev0010 devinst=13), USBDevice(vendor_id=0x806 product_id=0x806 bcd=0x717 devid=usb\vid_0806&pid_0806&rev_0717&mi_02 devinst=14)) No disabled plugins Looking for devices of type: MTP_DEVICE List of WPD PNP ids: ['\\\\?\\swd#wpdbusenum#{6e95af2a-885c-11e9-b20f-c8d9d21d6fbd}#0000000058b00000#{6ac27878-a6fa-4155-ba85-f98f491d4f33}'] No suitable MTP devices found Looking for devices of type: SMART_DEVICE_APP All IP addresses {'{3B2B062C-DC9F-402A-B413-29856624BF0C}': [{'addr': '192.168.1.235', 'netmask': '255.255.255.0', 'broadcast': '192.168.1.255'}], '{1E2A84A3-E307-11E8-B1FE-806E6F6E6963}': [{'addr': '127.0.0.1', 'netmask': '255.0.0.0', 'broadcast': '127.255.255.255'}]} No device is connected Looking for devices... Detection only works IF your PC can see the device.
Newer devices may need you to 'Allow" a USB connection, and may even require you to select the mode (File, photo...) AND they need this done EVERY TIME a CONNECTION is done. Or your PC Security is blocking a new, dangerous device You need to get that working, then Calibre has a chance |

Does your Paperwhite display the connected screen (should say USB Drive Mode at the top of the screen) when you plug the USB cable into the Paperwhite and the computer? Have you tried a different USB cable and/or a different USB port? Or even a different computer?

I have tried different USB ports and cables, nothing. The kindle is not recognised by my PC (so Calibre can't see it).
I have checked secutiry and nothing is blocking this connection. aaargh. Mark |

Sounds like you need to deal with Amazon support and figure out what's wrong with the device
