Adding cover image
I bought an EPUB w/o a cover image and want to include the title page of the corresponding PDF as cover image for the EPUB.
What is the best approach to add a cover image *inside* an EPUB file using Calibre? Thanks Michael |

Best Way (besides the obvious: one that works ) ? I use Sigil to edit existing epubs. That includes adding/shufflin' images. All you need (besides Sigil) is the Image in a JPG/JPEG, PNG (or GIF?) format. Locate where you want it in the Book view and use the Add image ('screen') tool. Fine tuning will require a switch to Codeview ((and some basic code skills ) |

Edit: This requires the epub to be freed from DRM. Last edited by pappcam; 03-03-2011 at 04:47 PM. |

Against first look this cannot be the correct solution
Though most ebook-readers (ADE, calibre, my own Ereader) can display such modified EPUBs, some fail. Looking at the resulting EPUB I see that Sigil rearranges all files inside the EPUB, adds the cover image but does not correctly rewrite the OPF/NCX file as required for correct cover images. Following the instructions in Best practices in ePub cover images (http://blog.threepress.org/2009/11/2...-cover-images/), manipulating manually creates a cofrrect EPUB - it's just too complicated. Any other ideas to do it using Calibre somehow? |

Exporting works most of the time. It depends on whether the cover can easily be identified (e.g. Mentioned in the toc.ncx file inside the epub). Conversion should only be needed if Calibre has to analyse the book to try and identify the cover.

In the book browser: Images section. Right-click the cover image file name. Save |

When this weeks release is out you can also right-click the image in the Book Details pane and copy/paste the cover. Kovid was kind enough to add this for me as a usability enhancement.
