Archiving firmware updates

Late last year, Onyx published the following on the firmware download page...

"Since January 1st, 2023, we will no longer renew packages, user manuals, and changelogs on this website, in order to streamline the update process and provide a better user experience. In the Settings menu of your BOOX tablet, you can download update packages, view changelogs, and obtain the user manual"

This means we don't have the ability to download new software releases and install it offline, or archive old versions.

How can we get around this?

I would like to start a discussion about what we can do to download and archive firmware releases.

Is there a way to intercept updates and pull them off of the device?

Is there a well-known URL or API which anyone has documented for grabbing newer firmware?

Please post your comments below.

This post has some useful info about how/where the update.upx file is downloaded on the local device and possibly how to intercept/grab it. It sounds like updates are downloaded locally to the /sdcard directory and you might be able to grab it from an MTP mount. I've never tried this, however.

Please follow this page for how to grab the latest firmware version and the download URL (in .upx format). This method would only give you the URL of the latest firmware but no the old firmware.

After the file is downloaded you can download this Python script to decrypt the .upx file into .zip file.
