Taking Care of Katrina - a short mystery, only .99!

When hired by Johnny Billings to kill off Katrina – Johnny’s grandmother – for an inheritance, first-time hit man Bruce Gavin thinks it will be easy money. What can an old lady knocking on death’s door do to stop him? But when he poses as Grandma Billings’ personal care assistant and takes her to the Minnesota State Fair, he discovers that he just may have gotten in over his head.

"Taking Care of Katrina" is an entertaining and dark short story by Joel Arnold. The story is about Bruce Gavin, a drug-using hulk of a figure who owes money and is delighted to see an e-mail from a long time friend, Johnny, offering him a job. However, it won't be simple. The job requires him to get rid of Johnny's grandmother. She's been unbearable to him and if he gets rid of her, there will be a large sum of money coming his way (and Bruce will also find himself rewarded after the job's done.)

There is a catch. The instructions clearly state that he must let Katrina, the grandmother, enjoy her last day. Take her to the fair and show her a good time. Bruce would like to get the job done as quickly as possible, but orders are orders. He can handle it--or so he thinks. Filled with tension and dark humor, this is one trip to the carnival that you won't ever forget.

Joel Arnold does a great job of fleshing out the characters in such a short amount of time. It's always a tricky thing when you're writing a short story. You don't want to give too little, but at the same time you don't want to give too much. Just the right amount, and that's what Joel has done. I found myself entertained throughout. You already know that things most likely aren't going to go according to plan, but you go on the ride anyway because you want to see what exactly will happen.
