Hinkle, Thomas C.: Black Storm. v1.0. 12 Jul 2024

Thomas Clark Hinkle (1876–1949) was an American novelist who specialized primarily in children's western dog and horse stories. His children's books were frequently used as supplemental reading in schools in the 1940s and 1950s and many titles were widely reprinted.

Black Storm: A Horse of the Kansas Hills is a wholesome children's western horse adventure.

Description:
Black Storm was his name, but the cowboys called him Black Dynamite, because of his terrific speed and because he threw every cowboy in John McDonald’s corral until young Joe Bain talked to him quietly and mounted him without the cruel spurs that rowelled his glossy sides. After that, Joe and his horse were inseparable and Black Storm became known far and wide.

When the Kaw and the Smoky Rivers overflowed, and Black Storm turned ten thousand stampeding longhorns, preventing a terrible disaster, his fame spread throughout Kansas. Horse thieves heard of him and one stormy night they knocked Joe unconscious and stole Black Storm. Then followed a dark period.

No man could ride him, but many tried. He was beaten and starved but his proud spirit remained unbroken. Finally the big horse got away and became an outlaw hunted by man and wolf. By a strange coincidence, Black Storm and Joe are reunited, and the story goes on full of action and excitement to the end.
