PDF Files.
Hy Guys,
I recently got a Cybook Gen3 specifically for reading PDF files and it is totally hopeless as it can only handle a small percentage of pdf files and just hangs and crashes repeatedly. So is the iRex iLiad any better on this front? Thanks for any help Andy |

I read almost nothing but PDFs on mine iliad, some very large (over 1,000 pages, over 100Mb). I've only had a problem with one 6 page article that was something to do with the way a figure had been created. There are limitations to the PDF viewer, most notably no built-in search. There are also community-enhanced versions that add additional features. Password protected PDFs can be read on the iliad, but not those with DRM.
If any of the PDFs you have had problems with on the cybook are freely available you could point us to them and we could check to see if they work ok on the iliad. |

Hi Daudi,
Thanks very much for the info, sounds very promising. Well only about 20% of the pdf files I try work on the Cybook. Here are a couple you could try for me if you have the time: http://www.cacr.caltech.edu/~sean/applied_math.pdf http://www.chameleon.synth.net/files...DSP56303UM.pdf Both of these just reset the cybook if I try to open them. Thanks for the interest Andy |

Hey, AnyCapon. It does work like a charm on iLiad.
Hyperlinks in ToC, index are working. Quite interesting that Cybook Gen3 can't open them. |

Here is one of of the problematic one, iLiad can render it, but it takes ages to load this page, because of the figure on it. crux: the grey gradient coloured background.

Great, Thanks for that.
I like the way you can annotate as well, very neat. I will order one tomorrow. Anyone want to buy a Cybook? All the best Andy |

Just so you know and don't feel cheated or disappointed, those shots are screenshots and not photos and make the screen look whiter than it really is. It is not bad, just not as white as those images. It is probably very similar to the cybook in that respect (others will correct me if I'm wrong).

Hi Daudi,
Thanks for the info. I expected the screen to be similar to the Cybook. For me being able to actually display the PDF files is what I am after, which is what the Cybook was advertised as being able to do and it looks like the Iliad actually can. Wireless and annotation will be nice as well. I am ordering tomorrow, Cheers Andy |

ages to render this file, while acrobat reader is much quicker. Filtering the file via ghostscript pdf2ps a.pdf a.ps ps2pdf a.ps b.pdf results in the file attached, which seems to be corrupt (and much bigger). |

I know its an oldish thread but also wanted to add I did the same.
Got a Cybook which was a lovely bit of kit BUT no good really for PDFs. Sold it and got and Iliad and the iliad is AWSOME for PDFs. Of course some can be a little hard to read due to screen size but overall very impressive... |

Well The iLiad arrived yesterday, having problems with some pdfs but it is looking like 95% work fine.
The Wireless network stuff is a nightmare though, could do with a lot of improvement. Cheers Andy |

It's not my intention to steal the thread AndyCapon, but I have a question in a similar PDF vein so I was hoping I could piggyback on yours...
I don't have a device yet. Mostly I would read PDFs, but for screenplays for movies. The screenplays fall into two categories-- scanned (which I guess are essentially image PDFs that get about 4 or 6 MB in size) and those printed directly to PDF, which are much smaller in size since they're purely text. I was wondering if I could post a couple and have an Iliad user test to see how it handles the formatting? I created a drop.io here that has: Bad Santa (274kb, printed to pdf) and The Big Lebowski (3MB, scanned to pdf) Again, I apologize (and please ignore) if you feel this is too off topic from the original question. |
