Ragged, Hyder: King Solomon’s Wives, or, The Phantom Mines (illus). v1. 28 Apr 2022
With illustrations and illuminated chapter initials; artist not attributed.
A motley crew of would-be adventurers set out to find treasure in the wilds of Darkest Elsewhere. This parody of H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines (1885) is of Science Fiction interest specifically for the spoof description of how the protagonists travel in a balloon equipped with a device which keeps it stationary while the world turns beneath it. A fast and bumpy ride, sometimes veering off-road into regions of slapstick. Hyder Ragged was the pseudonym of UK lawyer and author Henry Chartres Biron (1863-1940). This pseudonym has sometimes erroneously been ascribed to John de Morgan, himself the author of several Haggard parodies. ============ King Solomon’s Wives, by Henry Chartres Biron (1863-1940), was first published in 1887. Thanks for this. Haggard is always a welcome addition. But I was a bit bemused to see it classified as "Humor"

sorry for late response, I didn't get notified of your post.
Well, this is rather a parody/spoof/satire of Haggard's "King Solomon's Mines." It's not a brilliant book by any means, but is an amusing easy read (the "parody" does get a little thick and gooey sometimes). |
