The old mail-coach had, for the previous hour, been creeping up a steep road between stretches of brown morass. With exhilarating suddenness the bleak landscape changed The road began to dip between two wooded hills which towered on either side of the way, as if resolved that the first glimpse of the fair valley should be viewed through their protective giant gates.
