I was just skimming that article and misinterpreted that. You're totally right: and since that's what he really said, in corp-speak it basically means there's no chance for a Mirasol device in 2011. Summer 2012 is about the earliest realistic possibility if they haven't even figured out their manufacturing process yet.

Any word on cost? Weight?
If the device is priced like the iPad (which, to a very cheap person like me, means "high") then I wouldn't be putting away my Kobo anytime soon. Still, I'm all for a reflective, full-color display! Something to yearn for. |

There's no word on a tablet or a reader. Qualcomm is making a display. Conjecture on devices based on Mirasol are completely devoid of evidence. Their first commercial product is supposed to be a 5.7" ebook reader type screen. It might be fair to assume they are looking to deliver it in a chassis of similar size to current-generation ebook readers, but nobody knows for sure, and there's no evidence so far for any speculation as to price or specifications of a final Mirasol-based reader.

At SID they were talking about announcing a partner/customer in the 3rd quarter who would making/selling the 5.7 inch device in 4th quarter/1st quarter 2011.
If they are saying now that they still have to figure out how to mass produce the displays I cant understand how they felt comfortable with those statements in May. Last edited by Dulin's Books; 08-16-2010 at 02:40 PM. |

Follow up article with slashgear confirms they are in small volume production now with samples shipping to industry customers. http://www.slashgear.com/qualcomm-mi...-2011-1197307/ and that they are working with several OEMS
They continue to say there will be devices for purchase by consumers in Q1 2011 and Qualcomm has an event still planned for next month. Presumably that is when Mirasol will announce the manufacturing partner(s) |

The screens would need to cost a fortune to recoup $2 billions.

Why does every new product have to be described as a "something-killer"? There's room in the market for multiple different display technologies; the arrival of a new one doesn't mean that something else is going to be "killed".
