5.12.2.2 Can't install USBNetwork
Following the Tutorial Open Sesame! (AKA., The New & Improved JailBreak Index) Using 7-zip on a Win PC to extract the files, I prepared a Paperwhite 2 (6th gen) using the WatchThis jailbreak. I applied the hotfix JailBreak-1.16.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip , MR Package Installer kual-mrinstaller-1.7.N-r19303.tar.xz , and then KUAL.
At this point I attempted to load USBNetwork kindle-usbnet-0.22.N-r19297.tar.xz using the 'Install MR Packages' helper and although I briefly saw the name of the package appear in the 'destroy' message, the package hasn't shown up in the KUAL menu. On closer reading I realised I hadn't installed the coplate version of KUAL so applied the uninstall and then installed from KUAL-f190a38-20240104.tar.xz (my only mis-step AFAIK). This left me with two KUALs in the Library so I deleted the defunct one. But this has made no difference - further attempts to install the USBNetwork package still results in no-show. I have since loaded other packages OK - e.g. Kterm so it seems strange to not get USBNetwork loaded. Any tips here folks? |

You don’t need tar.xz files, but rather .bin files from within those archives.
UsePeaSip to deal with tar files. |

This is so weird then. Screenshot below of package being loaded... if it gets this far then, how can it not show up in KUAL? I do understand that 'unsuitable' packages get 'silently' dropped which seems to be what's happening. I don't know if it's significant but if I just drop the Update_usbnet_0.22.N_install_pw2_and_up.bin file into the top level directory, the UYK menu entry remains greyed-out. Is this to be expected? |

There is no mrpi log file there or anywhere else. I just tried again to use the Install MR packages helper to load the USBNetwork package to check this... The installer ran as usual, producing the same output as the screenshot above, but left no log in the extensions folder.

Hmm, interesting. If you had success installing and uninstalling KUAL with mepi, it definitely should have logs somewhere.
Either extensions/mrpi or just extensions folder. Can you check if your JB is working alright? Can you start KOReader? |

@Radian
Can you please double check once again, if you have the log? I checked on my Kindle Scirbe (5.16.21, but shouldn't matter), and it is here: /mnt/us/extensions/MRInstaller/log/mrinstaller.log The insides look something like this: Code:

Also, PW2 is fairly old platform, so all the model names should be in the package. Long story short, mrpi checks if the package targets this package before installing to make sure it is compatible. In the mean time, we can still double check that your model number is indeed there. Can you please share only three characters (#4 through #6) from your Kindle's Serial Number? For example, for a Serial Number of 16 characters, I need these: AAAA BBBB CCCC DDDD |

The serial numbers you asked for from #4~#6 are: ---4 22-- ---- ----
There's definitely no log file anywhere within MRInstaller... |

https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Serial_Numbers so it looks like no one has reported it and code that depends on S/N doesn't know how to handle it. That could explain the problems. I've never heard of the JB working but not MRPI, but that doesn't mean anything. |

I got the package for USBNet, and it has sources.
There is a file "libotautils5" that tries to get device ID to set screen parameters. I don't see PW2 anywhere in that script. However, if it doesn't find a match, it then just falls back to generic screen size. I didn't find any other hard stops based on model name in the install.sh either. The fact that MRPI worked for other packages tells me that mrpi itself works. Weird... |

@Radian,
Do you currently have the usbnet folder in Kindle's main root? |

What do you mean by usbnet folder in kindle's main root? The folder from within the .tar archrive with the .bin files in it?
I mean, we would only ever extract those .bins from there and place them in the kindle mrpackages folder (or at the top level). |
