Why is Amazon the only company...
Why is Amazon the only company with the newer eInk technology? Seems strange that these high contrast display screens are not available yet by anyone else. Today Amazon started taking orders for the kindle 3.

They are the ones with the biggest "financial clout" and hence probably got the first batch to come off the production line from PVI. I'm sure we'll see the screens from other manufacturers too over the next few months.

maybe the rest are looking more towards a color e-ink than the new e-ink as they may think that it is not as much of an upgrade?
I personally like the idea of the new perl screens, even though color would have an advantage for comic readers and art "book" collectors |

Colour eInk is at least a year away, if not more. I'm pretty sure that PVI will switch all their production to these new screens - it's simply a matter of who gets them first.

I agree with Harry. Some one has to be first. If you sell a product and only have a limited supply of widgets, who gets first allocation. Typically you will allocate the most widgets to the customer who purchases the most products from you.

I saw where somebody posted yesterday that Amazon had a 6 month contract lock on the production. I'd never seen that posted anywhere else but I could certainly see Amazon pushing for such a deal.
Anybody hear anything about that? |

I can certainly see Amazon, or anyone else for that matter, trying for a deal like that and taking it if they can get it. |

Amazon is probably the only company who can eat the loss of the unsold old-tech Kindles; the rest of them have to sell off their old stock first.

In the press release Amazon has been bragging about a proprietary waveform algorithm driving the screen. Might be simple marketting hype or there might be something else going on. On ocassion, big customers have been know to help finance their supplier's manufacturing facility. (A couple years back, MS paid for an LCD-panel facility Toshiba was building. The screens ended up on Zune.)
So, it is not impossible the Amazon might have a deal for the first 6 month's worth of Pearl screen. Unusual but not impossible. Would be nice to hear it from a semi-reputable source, though. |

I read in another thread Amazon had exclusivity on the Perl screen for 6 months or something. Not sure if it is true though. Where's the SiPx screen? That seems to be missing in action too. BOb |

If Amazon has a 6 month exclusivity, they very well may clean up big time. I hope this is not true as it would not bode well for competition.
