Bowman, Earl Wayland: The Ramblin' Kid. V2. 8 June 2012

The Ramblin' Kid
by Earl Wayland Bowman (1920)

Earl Wayland Bowman (1875-1952) was an author of popular stories and novels of the American West. He wrote for several newspapers in the Idaho Council valley, including the Advance and the Council Leader.

His other works include: Solemn Johnson Plus (1928) and Arrowrock (1931) which included many poems and stories that appeared previously in newspapers and magazines. Although many of his stories were written in California, he always considered himself an Idaho author.

Excerpt:
"It was plain to Skinny what had occurred. The cattle had drifted before the storm until stopped by the wire. While crowded against it a bolt of lightning had struck the fence, followed the metal strands, and killed the animals touching or nearest to it. In the fright the others plunged madly forward and had broken their way to freedom. Five hundred Diamond Bar steers, recently bought by Old Heck and brought from the Purgatory forty-five miles north of the Quarter Circle KT were out and rushing back to their former range."

The Ramblin' Kid was made into a movie starring Hoot Gibson in 1923.
