Seriousness Do You Ever Forget Who You Are....

...online, I mean.

I have a number of different online names that I use for different types of forums. I tend to be Xanthe on forums that are book/reading related; I use another name on computer-related forums, and so on.

I realized, after I had replied to an IM on a board - might have be this one - that I signed it with an intial belonging to another of my "names" and that I had forgotten for a moment which name I used here.

I'm not one of those people who uses made-up personas with my various names - what you see is who I am in real life, no matter which name I use - so luckily I don't have to keep track of any false personal histories.

But I was wondering about the rest of you. Do you use different names in different places online? Do you create different personas? Do you ever forget which "character" (for want of a better term) you are supposed to be?

I have two, that way I can't be self accused of forgetting why I am and where I am, at least not consciously .... sub-consciously, on the other hand, anything is possible.

I use two. And no, I don't switch them. Only subscribe to four forums, one I hardly ever look, and two that have the same name as I have here. And the fourth is a game forum.

No, I'm too lazy to be bothered by such minor things as identity - my browser and the forum settings take care of the logging in and my signature does the rest.

Well, I am the same person regardless of where I am. Or maybe two people. Professional me, and regular old me. But mostly, I'm the same person.

I do, however, have many names. Online, I use this name exclusively. It's an old nickname from college. But irl, I have a few other names. Sometimes I forget what name I am. It's the worst when I introduce myself to people, I have to think of how they know me, where they met me, what name they know me as. I didn't start life out with so many names. It just happened. it's a little confusing for me.

The weirdest thing, I've found, is when I exchange Christmas cards and I sign them with both my real name and my board name - my real name seems to be the fake name to me because I have to use it so infrequently as compared to my board names.

I've used Xanthe for so long that it already feels like it is part of my original name.

What is eppe?

who knows. It was written on the capsule, where I was tucked in, that was deposited by the waves on the beach of New Bedford, with a small piece of paper where it was written handle with care. The guy who found it, a Portuguese fisherman, traded it for a season ticket of the Bruins. How I ended up Italian? That's a weird story. Nobody would believe it.
