...What book (novel or short story) was the one that first introduced you to the genre and the life of a horror enthusiast?
Mine was "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood |

Cujo or Christine I'd say, though I don't really qualify as an enthusiast.
Do the Koontz books count as horror? |

Even as a child I liked scary stories, I can't remember which book first started it. My first adult horror novel was Stephen King's The Mist, which was also the first novel I read in English.

The Shining by Stephen King, closely followed by It and 'Salem's Lot.
I also like H.P. Lovecraft but I didn't discover him till later. |

The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty is the first horror novel I read. An excellent read.

Personally, I use "Horror: The 100 Best Books" and "Horror: Another 100 Best Books" both edited by Stephen Jones and Kim Newman. Highly recommended.

I think that the most horrific books I read were some of the true-crime ones - particularly Helter Skelter (which stopped me from reading true crime because I was so disgusted with reality!).

Two religious horror novels, The Sentinel and The Exorcist. But I think Dr. Seuss was the first creep-out stuff I read.

The same for me. When I read it, still in my teens, I was actually afraid of opening to book to continue reading as I was sure the devil himself was inside. Man did it play with my head... hehe
