Tizen Growing Pains
No, sorry world, I am not announcing a working K-Tizen here (yet).
Seems we have missed the "first commercial tablet" bragging rights: http://linux.slashdot.org/story/13/0...t-tizen-tablet Not that we actually care about Amazon Tablets in this forum. Those things are for people with color vision. The "first e-book retro-fit" bragging rights is still up for grabs. To save people a few of their Google credits....
The Platform Developer's entry page:
https://source.tizen.org/ (For people who might be interested in porting to a new platform - such as the Kindle e-book.) For porting u-boot and the Linux kernel to K-Tizen, any of the well established build/development systems specific to that chore would be a good choice. The Application Developer's entry page: https://developer.tizen.org/ (For people who might be interested in what resources are available to develop applications for a K-Tizen OS.) "pm me" if interested in joining a crew to port Tizen to the e-ink Kindles. Hint to Dokan crew: This is one of the meanings of "Open Source" not only are the sources open to the public, but the build systems are also open to the public. (I.E: the "P" in "GPL") Note to ixtab: Sorry, no obfuscated Java here. |

Quote:
Buildroot 2013.08 should be released in a few more weeks, with its improved ARM support and the ability to generate eglibc binaries. Only thing missing - about 879 BR makefiles. (Expect those can be generated from the rpm.spec files with a bit of Lua scripting.) Plus a bit of testing. (Oh, and merging Amazon's e-ink device changes into the version of the kernel and u-boot that Tizen 2.2 is using.) |

It is still "just us" and probably too big a project just to cross-compile it for two people.
But if we get really, really bored this coming winter (or get over-whelmed with volunteers) something might happen to this idea. PS: That "source snapshot" includes all of the current (as-of July) Tizen applications. Imagine a Samsung Galaxy S 5, in grayscale, that can't make telephone calls. 110% open source. (It is rumored that the S 4 is their last Android smartphone.) If the BR generated prototype actually works - then we can sign-up with tizen.org and push the "e-book" version into their repo. Let all the e-book reader manufacturers worry about it then. (bye, bye, lab126 - you guys better polish up your resumes.) |
