In The Arena: Stories of Political Life ---
These six short stories were published in various magazines from 1901 to 1904; this book collection was published in 1905. Although the title might imply tales simply about battles in Congress or on the Senate floor, they are not.
“...the stories are obviously early Twentieth Century, but the morals are universal and quite poignant for today...” [from Goodreads review by "Grant"]. That thread of poignancy stitches these stories together into a common theme, demonstrating how political ambitions, maneuvers, and decisions affect ordinary citizens — and the politicians themselves.

-----
These stories are a bit different than Tarkington's novels, you will find little of his usual descriptive prose. Three are told in first person, which is also different than usual. Some very touching situations may bring a lump to your throat.

Eight full-page illustrations by three different artists--- I wish the quality was better, but source was not good. Some minor corrections to text, please let me know if I missed any. Enjoy!
