New Kindles - able to sideload/Calibre??
I have not seen anything definitive on whether the new Kindles, including the Fire, can be sideloaded.
The specs say that mobi and other files can be viewed, but says nothing about how they get there. With the emphasis on wireless and cloud, I am a little concerned that the content I have built up in the past might not be transferable. Does anyone know for sure? I know everyone has an opinion, I am seeking the facts, as we know them. |

You absolutely will be able to sideload files, on all versions of the kindle, if for no other reason than that .mobi files are just that: files that you can drag and drop. As for calibre integration, that'll require Kovid to add the drivers/interface to calibre, but it's nearly just as certain that he will. There's going to be zillions of them sold.

Wait awhile, I'm betting Calibre will get the drivers in 8.21. Kovid stays on top of these things very well.

Unless Amazon does something to make it difficult to interface with the new Kindles, support for them will be added soon after they start shipping.

If nothing else, the email functionality should work without any effort on anyone's part - Amazon seems very devoted to the "personal docs" portion of their Kindles. Based on some recent reporting, they're even going to start archiving 5 GB of personal docs on the newer devices.

Side loading works fine, as does email. Amazon saves the ones I email to my k4. Can't see any changes needed.

The Fire will surely need some driver attention, methinks. It may be that the e-ink versions won't...although I'd be surprised if the Touch versions don't.
