database disk image is malformed

Am I correct when I infer from other threads that this message, generated by Calibre, means that something is wrong with the database on my Aura? To be remedied by a factory reset and a rebuilding of the database (all books are on the external card)?

Correct but normally there is no need to factory reset; just go Settings | Accounts and Sign out from the Kobo account.

Correct. Even if you have hacked the device by updating the SQL database to get around the requirement to register with the Kobo website, the logout function will just delete the database and force the setup steps to be redone.

OK, thanks. Couldn't stop the device from upgrading to the newest f/w, but luckily wifi gave out before it started downloading my books from the Kobo account (they're all sideloaded).

It wouldn't have downloaded all you books from the server. When you do a setup via WiFi, only a few books are downloaded. I think it's the five most recently read that haven't been finished.

If you want to pick the firmware version, use of the Kobo desktop app to do the setup. It will download the latest firmware, but you can replace the files with the firmware you want to use. Or remove them completely. It will start downloading all the books, but, it has a skip button.
