How have the nominees in each category been determined?

I had to do a lot of write-ins this year. I think I'd read two out of all the opening round nominees (and neither were "award material" in my opinion). I'd read about eight or nine of the initial nominees last year.

This kind of thing doesn't result in choices that are to my taste, but given that, I still lost any remaining respect for the process last year, when they nominated a book in the history category which had been published in February of the year before, as I knew because I read it when it came out. I emailed TPTB about its ineligibility, but it took them a long time to act and it was pulled very late in the process and replaced with the runner-up, which of course ruined its admittedly slim chances. Don't they even vet the selections?

Interestingly enough; I had to contact the Librarian's group about one of my write-in's being incorrectly flagged as ineligible. They did fix it pretty quickly, though. But with nearly a million votes in the opening round, I think it's pretty clear that it's just a big, fat popularity backpat.
Still ... it brings things to my attention that I probably wouldn't have heard about otherwise. |
