August 2021 Nominations (Classics)

August 2021 Nominations (Classics)

The category for August 2021 is Classics.

Everyone gets three nominations and three seconds.

We'll end the nominations on July 29 and the voting will begin after that.

So let the nominations begin.

I'm starting early to give more time to decide what you want to read.

In the Sword and Sorcery thread there was some talk about the swashbuckling genre and I wanted to try one. If Anyone cares to recommend a few, I will most likely nominate one.

A swashbuckler that might have a legitimate claim to being a classic is Rafael Sabatini's Scaramouche. This one has it all: the French Revolution, the Commedia dell'arte, romance, family drama, fencing, duels, Darth Vader (sort of).

Someone said it better than I can (sort of):

Oh, and the LibriVox audiobook read by Gord Mackenzie is EXCELLENT!!!

The New Leaf club read a couple of swashbucklers, The Three Musketeers and The Scarlet Pimpernel, if you’d care to peruse the discussions. The Dumas discussion was, uh, lively.

I am going to nominate Flashman by George MacDonald Fraser.

Quote:
Fraser revives Flashman, a caddish bully from Tom Brown's Schooldays by Thomas Hughes, and relates Flashman's adventures after he is expelled in drunken disgrace from Rugby school in the late 1830s. Flashy enlists in the Eleventh Light Dragoons and is promptly sent to India and Afghanistan, where despite his consistently cowardly behavior he always manages to come out on top. Flashman is an incorrigible anti-hero for the ages. This humorous adventure book will appeal to fans of historical fiction, military fiction, and British history as well as to fans of Clive Cussler, James Bond, and The Three Musketeers.

I’m not a “first in the series” purist like some :cough: but having read them, I do think people are best served by reading this one first.

No. Sorry, but I won't have time to read along. Just a friendly recommendation.

Books for August do not have to just be about sword and sorcery.

Given that the genre for August is classics, I thought there would be a flock to nominate.

I nominate Red Pottage by Mary Cholmondeley.

Quote:
Mary Cholmondeley wrote at the beginning of the 20th century. She spent most of her life in England caring for her mother. By age 18 she was convinced she would never marry. She is best remembered for her satirical novel Red Pottage. Red Pottage is the story of adultery and a clergyman who destroys his sister's art. The first plot contained in this novel is that of Rachael West an heiress and her love for a man trapped in an illicit affair (spoiler??? removed). The second plot is about a gifted female writer who is unable to break away and start her own life free of her family.
I'm nominating it because of this review by KJ Charles:
Quote:
Wildly enjoyable Victorian melodrama about three women: Hester the author, living with her appalling clergyman brother, Rachel who's done the rags to riches thing and had a painful love affair, and Lady Newhaven, whose adultery sets the plot in motion. Rollicking good melodramatic fun with people behaving appallingly and lots of thundering morality (not all conventional). If you like that kind of thing, you'll love it.
