Lightbulb Ubooquity - Content server for ecomics and ebooks
Hello,

I've been working for some time now on a server to access the comics and ebooks stored on my computer from my tablet and my phone. I think I've reached the point where the software is good enough to be shared with other people who could find interest in it.
This is a home project, primarily developped because I needed it for me. I'm not selling anything.

Ubooquity is a small content server, designed to serve comics and ebooks (even if you can use it to share any kind of file). Its purpose is to allow easy and quick browsing of a collection of ebooks/comics hosted on your personal computer or your NAS. The primary feature I wanted was to be able to browse covers and metadata, instead of just file names, to decide what I wanted to read on my tablet.



I also tried to keep the configuration as simple as possible. Once the server is installed (basically only a file to copy if you already have Java installed), you just have to choose the directories you want to share and they will be available through any browser (computer, tablet, phone...). A matter of minutes.

And since the software is written in Java, it can run on almost anything (Windows, Linux, Mac, Rapsberry Pi, etc).

Other nice things I've put in it:
  • web administration page, if you prefer to do everything through your browser
  • user management with secured access, to decide who can see what
  • online comic reader, to read your comics without downloading huge files
  • compatibility with Calibre metadata, for better ebooks collection management
  • command line mode, to run it on "pure" server machines



TL;DR
Ubooquity is a free content server for ebooks and ecomics.
You can download it here.
Unzip the file, double click on Ubooquity.jar and configure the directories you want to share. That's it !

Detailed explanations are available in the documentation and the F.A.Q.

Right now my needs are covered by the current version of Ubooquity. But I'd like to improve it over time using feedback from users (if users there are ).

I am currently working on adding support for "mobi" files.
So as long as your comics and book files are in this format, they will be recognized in the next version of Ubooquity.

It won't work for DRM protected files though.

Ubooquity in itself is just a web server allowing to download files.
It's the files you share that will be compatible or not with a given device.

When Ubooquity supports ".mobi" files (hopefully in the next version), you will be able to share ".mobi" files, download them and read them on your Kindle.
But your Kindle Paperwhite is capable of reading several file formats in addition to .mobi files. Ubooquity will not be able to display these other formats.

So it all boils down to the format of the files you have.

Only format worth uploading to PW is MOBI :-)
PDF support is not very good and CBZ/CBR reader is completely castrated in newest models.

Thanks for your quick response. It means that my KPW2 has its own browser, it can use ubooquity directly, right? Or I must use Ubooquity on MacOSX to download .mobi files and transfer them into my KPW2? Plz let me know.
P.S. I am running your Ubooquity successfully on MACOSX Mavericks 10.9.2 with installed JAVA.

Yes, with next version you should be able to download your files directly using the Kindle browser.
I don't own a Kindle so I never tried it, but it worked that way in my Kobo (with epub files).

It will. But FYI build-in Kindle browser is quite restricted and it blocks many file extensions.
I don't know PW list but Keyboard allow only: MOBI, AZW, PRC and TXT.

Ubooquity 1.4.0 is here, with the long awaited mobi support.
Here is a complete list of what has changed.

New features

- Support for mobi files. Let me know how it works for you, I have not many mobi files to test this feature.
- Support for PDF files in the books section. The difference with PDF as comics is that PDF books get their metadata displayed (although I did not find many PDF with proper metadata) and their cover rendered instead of being just a extracted picture.

Miscellaneous

- Web administrator password field characters are now hidden.
- Debug mode has been removed as the bug it was supposed to help solve (partially displayed covers) was not really a bug.
- Default display mode for books is now "by folder" (instead of "flat"), same as the one used for comics. The difference with comics default display mode was confusing.
- IP address of users trying to login are now written to the log file, to help identify potential attacks.
- The number displayed on folders (in "folder" mode) now recursively includes all files in the folder and in its subfolders.
- The number displayed on foldersis now displayed even if over 99.
- Added a loading icon between pages when reading comics.
- Slightly improved layout on smaller screens.
