Archive.org
https://archive.org/details/texts is a wonderful collection of library materials.
Searching is easy enough if one knows the author and/or book title. Does anyone know of a search by genre-fiction, mystery, detective stories? This would be a great tool. Thnks, Charlie |

It should work, depending on what tags are attached to the book.

I've always found it very challenging to search for things at the archive. Tagging is haphazard and varies significantly among different contributors. The same items show up with different tags in different collections, etc.
Bottom line: I usually wind up doing multiple searches before I either find what I'm looking for, or give up entirely. Good luck! |

Koreader includes an OPDS access to http://bookserver.archive.org/catalog/ This just gives me the following selections:
Alphabetical By Title Most Downloaded Books Recent Scans The "Most Downloaded Books" is almost useful. Luck; Ken |

Archive.org is a great resource, but does need to be used with caution; there's a lot of stuff there that shouldn't be. Before downloading anything from there, it's a good idea to check whether or not it's in the public domain in your country.

I don't think it's my responsibility to check. I think it's archive.org's responsibility. If a reputable site like that offers me the chance to download material I'm interested in, that's good enough for me.

No, it's definitely your responsibility to check. There's lots of stuff here at MR that it would be illegal for you to download, for example.

I've always found it interesting that Archive.org blatantly violates copyright law and no one seems to care.

Given that there are works that are out of copyright in the UK but not in the US, out of copyright in the US but not in the UK, out of copyright in Canada but not in the US and UK, even Amazon get caught out from time to time when the publisher ticks the wrong boxes.
There seems no means of pointing this out unless you know how to communicate with the copyright owner. |

There is virtually original content on the web that's out of copyright in the U.S. The Internet has not been around long enough.
Every website I've ever done is copyright ALL RIGHTS RESERVED, yet every one of these has been duplicated at archive.org and is now part of their content. They have NO permission to republish my materiel. DMCA notices are simply ignored. They operate outside the law with complete impunity. |

archive.org honors robot.txt. Don't want them to access your pages? Use it.

When you go shopping at a B&M store and see something with a designer label, say, do you think it's up to you to check whether it's counterfeit merchandise? Or do you rely on the store to fairly represent the items it offers?
There's a lot of material in the public domain because copyrights weren't renewed, back when renewals were required. It's not just a matter of looking at the year of publication and/or the author's death. |

Not to mention renewals that were later determined to be invalid because copyright had already been compromised by non-compliance with the notice placement requirements in effect at the time.
