Historical Naval fiction
Hi, I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for some historical naval fiction set in the latter half of the 19th century or early 20th century?

I haven't read these so can't comment much, but the only thing from that time period that comes to mind is the "Honor" series by Robert N Macomber which starts in 1863 during the US Civil War and goes to 1889 so far.

How far into the 20th do you want to go? If you go as far as WWII there are a few more I can list later.
Here's a trilogy by Max Hennessy I ran across it runs from WWI through WWII... The Lion At Sea Dangerous Years Back to Battle |

Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series, starting with Master and Commander, is considered to be one of the best depictions of British Naval service during the Napoleonic wars and a bit of the War of 1812. I haven't finished the series myself, but the books I've read were really enjoyable.

The Nicholas Everard series by Alexander Fullerton about a young naval officer in WWI. The first book is The Blooding of the Guns about the battle of Jutland in 1916.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any e-books. |

As @jgaiser said, the Patrick O'Brian series is excellent (his writing improves throughout the series)...
In the same approximate time period: -Richard Woodman's Nathaniel Drinkwater series is quite good (though I didn't care for the rest of his works) -Dewey Lambdin's Alan Lewrie series is very good with a flawed and somewhat humerous main character (this series is ongoing still) In the same time but different genre (Non-Naval)- -Allan Mallinson's Matthew Hervey series about a British Cavalry officer in the Light Dragoons from the Napoleonic Wars through India and South Africa is well done. -Bernard Cornwell's Richard Sharpe series is a classic from the perspective of a foot soldier during the Napoleonic War mostly set in Spain and Portugal An Identical thread was started a while ago...you might check it out (here) Last edited by GoSharks; 08-09-2014 at 11:25 AM. |

Another Napoleonic series, less well known in North America but still ongoing, is Alexander Kent's Bolitho series. I read the early ones a long time ago, well before the Aubrey/Maturin books were written, and I liked them a lot. But I've got a bunch of them in my TBR right now, thanks to some Kobo codes, and I will probably start on them soon. (note: these are not in the time period requested by the OP. )
