Film chronicles decline of the independent book store
My local NPR radio station was having a discussion on the current state of independent local bookstores this morning and mentioned this movie. I was hoping to get a chance to call in and see how they felt about ebooks too, but work.. as usual, got in the way.

The New American Bookstore is just starting to emerge and its not down on the corner or in a mall, its on the Internet. They will be small specializing in the works of one or a close group of people. Perhaps they will sell only ebooks or have arrangements with a print-on-demand place for physical copies of their books.
The lines between writer-publisher-printer are breaking down. Back catalogs need no longer go "out of print." Self publishing or "vanity press" has lost most of its prior stigma and now self published works are even Publisher's Weekly now notes and comments on self published works. Some of the MobileRead members publish their own works such as Steve Jordan (I really enjoyed his Lambs Hide, Tigers Seek book.) What we will see is a rise of critics that seek, select, and recommend new works. We need them now more than ever. |
