Anne of Green Gables
by L. M. Montgomery FREE at BN.com Overview: As soon as Anne Shirley arrives at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she is sure she wants to stay forever...but will the Cuthberts send her back to the orphanage? Anne knows she's not what they expected-a skinny girl with fiery red hair and a temper to match. If only she can convince them to let her stay, she'll try very hard not to keep rushing headlong into scrapes and blurting out the first thing that comes to her mind. Anne is not like anybody else, the Cuthberts agree; she is special-a girl with an enormous imagination. This orphan girl dreams of the day when she can call herself Anne of Green Gables. Anne, an eleven-year-old orphan, is sent by mistake to live with a lonely, middle-aged brother and sister on a Prince Edward Island farm and proceeds to make an indelible impression on everyone around her. Also From Barnes & Noble: When mischievous orphan Anne Shirley arrives at the Cuthbert farm Green Gables, she knows she wants to stay forever. One of the best-loved & most enduring books in all of children's literature, written with sweetness and charm. Ages 10 & up |

Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street
by Herman Melville Free at BN.com Overview: The classic tale of existential despair A Wall Street lawyer specializing in bonds and mortgages hires a respectable young man to copy legal documents by hand. At first, the new scrivener approaches his duties with a calm efficiency. Then comes the day when his response to a new assignment is, “I would prefer not to.” The mysterious phrase soon becomes Bartleby’s reply to everything asked of him, and his surrender to inertia is both maddening and inexorable. Torn between frustration and pity, anger and sorrow, his employer desperately tries to save Bartleby, but the cause is as doomed to disappointment as life itself. A strange and haunting fable that continues to resonate a century and a half after it was first published, Bartleby, the Scrivener is a masterpiece of American literature. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices. |

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
Nightmare Kingdom: A Romance of the Far Future by Barbara Bartholomew (ISFDB), 2nd in The Chosen of Sanctuary YA sci-fi abductee colonization adventures with romantic elements. Bartholomew has had several YA science fiction novels paperbacked from Signet during the 80s (some of which we've previously gotten free in the past), and has also been a Silhouette romance author. The captive children from Earth have grown up, but Jamie Lewis Ward still is haunted by his memories of the lovely and defiant girl who was his first love. Now the alien emperor she married, Mathiah the tenth, has died of the genetic illness that almost invariably accompanies the extraordinary speaking gift of the aristos who command the many planets of the Aremian Empire. With his death, the protection that has allowed the Earther captives in New London on the planet called Blood to live in peace and contentment is at an end and the girl from Chicago who married the emperor is widowed and powerless to protect their two daughters. Jamie and Claire who found their own Romeo-Juliet romance ended by interplanetary politics must once again rely on each other as they fight for the safety of the chosen survivors from Earth and deal with the whole new problem of the princess who has inherited frightening gifts through her mixed parentage. Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
Child of Tomorrow by Barbara Bartholomew (ISFDB), 2nd in her Time Keeper series of YA science fiction adventures, originally paperbacked by Signet in 1985. Lost in time, Jeanette and Amy know the stepping stones were destroyed and that their friend Jesse is trapped in the colorful past of their own world, far from his own home and family.Seeking another route to reach him, they find a second timeway where, at a shabby looking carnival, they take a wild carousel ride that throws them into past, present, and then future. With the help of Amy's alien friend Selma, the three friends struggle to recapture their own lost reality and find themselves caught once again in the tangled labyrinth of time and place that takes them to the most dangerous place of all. Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: Falcon's Dragon by Argentina-born author Luli Gray (ISFDB), an omnibus of her her Falcon's Egg duology of children's magic-oriented urban fantasy, which were originally hardcovered by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 1995 and 2002. The 1st book in this was nominated for the 1996 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children's Literature, according to ISFDB. FALCON'S DRAGON is the story of a little girl named Falcon who finds a hot, scarlet egg in New York City's Central Park and carefully brings it home to care for it. And, one day, a baby dragon cracks through the eggshell and changes Falcon’s life forever. [description of the two individual books omitted] FALCON'S DRAGON is a story of mystery and magic, of dragonsbreath and enchanted gardens as Falcon and Egg learn about life, family and the magical world of dragons. ETA: free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: That's When I Kissed the Tiger by Stella Pevsner (Wikipedia), tween-level animal heist adventure novel. This doesn't appear to be one of her backlist published books (unless she's changed the title), but Pevsner has a really long list of paperback and hardcover credits from Simon & Schuster imprints such as Pocket Books, starting from the 70s onward. Twelve-year-old Freddie is ticked off at his parents for making him fly out to visit Hicksville relatives on a farm where nothing ever happens. That’s before cousin Kristin begs him to help her find out why her Great Pyrenees dog, usually so calm and gentle, now disappears each night and comes home agitated and all screwed up. When the kids sneak out and follow the dog they discover a caged tiger, illegally held by a drunken farmland neighbor. So now comes the problem: How can they rescue the tiger and get him shipped to a shelter without any of the adults catching on? The kids are about to pull off this daunting maneuver when something even worse puts up a roadblock: Can they salvage this mission without putting their lives—and the tiger’s!—in jeopardy? And finally, can these two, who deserve black belts in the art of telling lies, come up with a big enough whopper to keep them from getting grounded for life? Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
The Wrong-Colored Dragon by Lynne Reid Banks (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a children's fantasy novel by the author of the kidlit classic The Indian in the Cupboard, which I vaguely remember reading as a child. Ferocity P. Bychahedoff is born to normal dragon parents, but he is red - not a dragon colour, which sets him apart. Dragonkind have defeated their age-old enemies, the Uprights, following a planetary catastrophe, sending them into exile on scattered islands while dragons take over the mainland. The world is now a more peaceful place. But there are difficulties. Without the advantage of hands, dragons find they cannot build, or mine the coal they need for their chestfire-boxes. So Ferocity's 'dag' is sent on a mission to find some Uprights and perhaps make common cause with them. Ferocity meets and befriends a young female Upright and together they all travel to the Uprights' island exile, where a hostile welcome awaits the dragons... |
