Set user-defined column value for recipe?

I have created a user-defined columnin my database to mark books as read/unread/unknown. Is there a way from within a recipe to set a value for this field for a newly-downloaded article? I'd like to mark new articles as unread.

No recipes have no access to the database. You could try messing witht he OPF to set the custom column metadata in the OPF, but that will only work if the ebook format the recipe is generating has support for custom column metadata.

Thanks for the info. It's not important enough to go to that level - I can just set it manually when I'm done reading each issue.
