Growing library of free PD Google ebpus converted to MOBI
A while ago I posted about the beta release of www.retroread.com, a free service which allows you to convert Google epubs (public domain) and forward them to your Kindle. A few folks responded to my "registration key required" early beta.
The service has greatly expanded and evolved. All converted books are now available for free download (each time a book is converted, it's added to the library). Google Books Search is used to search the library of converted books, and this can be accessed directly from your Kindle. (The www.retroread.com url is Kindle browser friendly.) So you can search and download directly from your Kindle -- all free. Don't find the book you want in the library? Register and convert it yourself, which simply means downloading it from books.google.com and uploading it to retroread.com. It's not necessary (but nice) to send result to Kindle (Amazon will charge you $0.15 - $0.30), results can also be sent to your regular email address. Plus the converted book is added to the library where it becomes available to everyone. It's "open beta" -- fairly stable and featureful, and still changing. Enjoy. www.retroread.com David Eyes |

Sorry, I'm new to all this and I'm trying to figure this all out. Does this work on library books also?

Nice idea ... but where the book already exists as a Gutenberg Edition you are MUCH better off to grab that. The Google Books are fine as they go -- and I am a strong supporter of the scanning project -- but the OCR that comes off them is not ready for prime time without some editing. Just creating an ePub directly doesn't cut it.
