norton blocked install, locked out of Sigil
Hi Norton blocked installation of Sigil-2.3.0-Windows-x64-Setup
"due to a policy violation data protection has blocked... etc" So I legally canceled install, sigil said it was returning the files, but now I'm locked out of sigil with its msg: "code execution cannot proceed because icuin74.dll was not found." It tells me to re-install the program but I don't know where to find the ver previous to 2.3? I can't try installing 2.3 again because I'll just get the norton msg again. I never had a problem when I updated to the previous version 2.2.x whatever that x was. Thank you! |

Have you tried turning off norton, installing Sigil 2.3.0, turn back on norton, tell norton to trust Sigil, then try launching Sigil. Googling "how to tell Norton to not block an app" comes up with many links.

Why do people still waste money and time on third-party antivirus on Windows? All they do is break things.
Clearly the install wasn't completely blocked by Norton. The only version of the Sigil executable that would be looking for icuin74.dll is Sigil 2.3.0. That's because earlier versions of Sigil didn't use, or include, the 3 ICU dlls. I've no idea what bug Norton has up its butt. Exempt Sigil's installer, exempt its program directory, and exempt Sigil's preferences folder and try again. If that doesn't work, my advice would be to put as much distance between Norton and your computer as you can. Last edited by DiapDealer; 08-16-2024 at 02:11 PM. |

Friends do not let friends use Norton. (since Symantec took over)
Their whole marketing system is based on FEAR and lots of 'we saved you' type messages |

I'm not even taking sides. Third-party active Antivirus is unnecessary on Windows altogether. Defender suffices (and even it overreaches at times). The notion that an extra third-party Antivirus package (that actively monitors the system) is still needed (especially from Windows 10 on) is one of the largest scams perpetrated on Windows users. They break more than they'll ever prevent.
In truth, I've never even had a hint of virus while using nothing but Defender since late Windows 7. But then again... I'm not really one of those people who falls for the notion that I could get out of a child pornography charge my merely giving the FBI my credit card number. |

thank you! I really appreciate everyone's feedback. If I cancel norton (it's due for renewal) what do I use in its place? I googled Defender and could find only Bitdefender which costs the same as norton. I've used norton since the beginning of time.
I found 2.2.1 which for me is the simplest to figure out what to do. I had to click Assets under it on that page, that's why I didn't see it before |

I tried turning off Automatic Program Control in norton which seems to be the most advanced action to take, but this time the install of 2.3 got stuck on: "an error occurred while trying to replace logo.eps. DeleteFile failed: code 5" -- and then again, after canceling install, when I clicked on my epub file I got that same "icuin74.dll was not found" msg so I guess I'll just stick to 2.2.1 which works when I install it. I can access my epub files again

Windows Defender is built-in to windows...just goto settings and select 'Privacy & security > Windows Security'...also make sure you completely remove Norton...don't leave anything behind. I've only used Defender for YEARS now, and haven't had a single problem with viruses/malware.

Completely removing Norton used to be quite the effort in and of itself. It will not go easy into that dark night.

The solution is to fully remove Norton and use Windows Defender. I'm using Windows Defender and it works very well. I've not had a false positive on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Norton is full of false positives. Plus Norton noticeably slows down your computer. If Norton was truly going to protect your computer, it would uninstall itself.

Been decades, but Symantec had a tool to completely remove all the bits left behind. (And it was not just the Main App I think they had hook on the hooks)

It also used to be that files were moved by Norton to a Quarantine area, and the ability existed within the app to restore files from quarantine.
