Hornung, E. W.: A. J. Raffles, Gentleman Thief. v1. 26 Nov 2022
The complete collection of the Raffles stories, comprising twenty-six short stories and a novel. This entertaining collection of crime stories presents the adventures of one of fiction’s most enduring characters, the elegant A. J. Raffles, man-about-town, thief, and “finest slow bowler of his generation.” He indulges his passion for cricket and crime with the aid of his faithful sidekick Bunny Manders. (Yes, the pair are somewhat the obverse of Holmes and Dr. Watson…) ============== Ernest William Hornung (7 Jun. 1866 – 22 Mar. 1921), brother-in-law to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is most famous for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th century London. He was a prolific writer of other fiction as well, publishing numerous books from 1890 on. Although much of Hornung’s work has fallen into obscurity, his Raffles stories continue to be popular, and have formed numerous film and television adaptations. …“critics have interpreted Raffles as a prototype of the antihero in modern crime fiction,” and he is seen as a literary “forerunner of The Saint, James Bond and other insouciant types.” ============= I thought the library could use a spiffed-up Raffles collection, so quotes are curled, italics restored, etc. If you enjoy Raffles and Bunny, take a peek at these parodies by John Kendrick Bangs: epub: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=315253 Kindle: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=315252 ============= The Raffles stories were first published 1899 ~ 1909.
