Isabella Baumfree (c. 1797 - 1883) was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York and later changed her name to Sojourner Truth. She was a vocal American abolitionist and a strong supporter of women's rights, religious tolerance, prison reform, and pacifism. She dictated her memoirs to her friend Olive Gilbert which were published as The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave in 1850.
