Kobo Glo HD successor?
My Kobo Glo HD is slowly dying. The USB socket hasn't worked in months, and now I'm not able to connect to my Calibre server online any longer.
It's my preferred e-reader due to the combination of 300 dpi screen clarity and customizable fonts. I'm pretty picky about fonts, unfortunately. What are my options, now that Kobo isn't making a Glo HD anymore? I buy most of my stuff from the Amazon store and convert to EPUB via Calibre. |

Kobo is supposedly releasing a new ereader this month. Kobo Aura H2O version 2, from what I understand. So I wouldn't buy anything until that is announced, if you can wait. If you can't wait, perhaps the current version of the H2O would suit you.

It's kind of a sad state of affairs, but if you want another 6" Kobo that is as good as the Glo HD, your best option is... another Glo HD, from eBay or Amazon.
If you don't mind a larger screen, there's the H20 at 6.8" and the Aura ONE at 7.8". There's also the announced H20 Edition 2. But details on that one are sketchy. Last edited by ZodWallop; 04-11-2017 at 05:54 PM. |

Do you mean the socket is physically broken - visibly displaced, can't charge etc - or something else? Is it something you'd like to troubleshoot, or have you exhausted all those options?

I agree: Just because it's discontinued, doesn't make it undesirable. (I realized no one said that.) When I want to dip out of the Kindle world (which I do every so often, since I enjoy diversity), I find my Kobo Glo HD a wonderful reading device. |

To be honest, I can personally see not the slightest hint of a difference between the 250dpi H20 screen and a 300dpi screen. Once you reach the point at which individual pixels are invisible, extra resolution achieves little.

I really prefer the smaller form factor of the Glo HD, since I read on the NYC subway.
My socket connection is weird. It works fine for charging, which tells me there is no hardware issue. Yet when I connect to my Windows 10 PC, it fails to recognize the Kobo (didn't use to have this issue). A call to Kobo Support told me that Windows would release a patch to fix this issue. Having fully updated my Windows PC, still no patch. Do current generation Kindles allow font hacking? I haven't kept up with it since I bought the Glo HD. I would hate to have to go back to the Kindle world. |

I don't see a huge different between my (original) Aura and the Voyage. But some some people are more sensitive to those differences than others.

That was a short-lived problem which was fixed with the next monthly Windows update, wasn't it?

That was a problem many users experienced a few months ago after Windows 10's Anniversary Update -- which has been resolved by now thanks to a fix issued my Microsoft, though. If this is not available to you, one workaround that seemed to work at the time was to format the reader to FAT32 using either Windows' standard format tool or software such as MiniTool Partition Wizard: after that you would need to set it up again with your account and everything, but it should connect to your PC normally again. If you don't want to lose your books and settings, you could copy all of the drive's contents by connecting it to a computer running a former version of Windows (or even 10 with no Anniversary Update) or by running a Linux live distribution on your own PC, and then copying everything back onto the reader after you have finished setting it up.
This was the thread where the issue was discussed, this a version of the workaround. |

MS fixed it (at least for the vast majority) and if you've sideloaded a "newish" firmware Kobo had fixed it in the firmware as well.
