Sony ereader apps for Iphone, Blackberry and Android

Has Sony announced any plans for any ereader apps for third party devices?

I have a Sony PRS-700 that I am happy with but I want to upgrade to take advantage of the higher quality newer screens that Sony and Amazon now have. My wife has a Kindle and I envy her ability to read the same book on both her reader at home and her blackberry at work.

I read in an older thread that Sony apps should be appearing around November. Don't quote on that though as it was an old thread.

I really want an app for my iPhone. Amazon, Kobo, BN, Borders, iBooks and others have apps so I think it's important for Sony to remain competitive in this area. It is frustrating that they have expected people to use their Sony Reader Library software to buy their books rather than an interactive website.

To answer your question, yes, they have announced plans for smartphone apps but no specific dates. It was included in their press release in September when they announced the new 350/650/950 ereaders. You can find the entire press release at this link.
http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_ro...ase/58295.html

Some excerpts:
"In addition to the new devices in the US, Sony announced development of a set of applications for iPhone and the Android Marketplace to extend the Reader experience across multiple portable devices."

"With Reader™ Desktop Edition (formerly Reader Library) for Apple’s Mac OS X and Microsoft® Windows® and Reader™ Mobile Edition for Apple iPhone and Google Android-based smartphones, users will be able to synchronize their reading among multiple devices. These free applications, available later this year, will offer an intuitive digital reading experience with an elegant interface and access to Sony’s Reader Store for browsing and purchasing content."

In the meantime, txtr has iPhone/iPod/iPad and Android apps that work with Adobe Adept DRM. It doesn't have a lot of features, but it works.

There is also a new iPhone/iPod/iPad app called bluefire reader that also works with Adobe Adept DRM. There is an active thread about the bluefire reader under the Apple forum here:

Thank you everyone for your responses.

The new apps will probably be released at the same time as the Sony Daily Edition PRS-950. As I already have a 6" Sony reader I will be buying the PRS-950. I will also be buying the new Kindle 3. My wife will get the new Kindle and I will receive her Kindle 2.

I have become an ereader collector.
