Beyond the Doors of Death by Science Fiction Hall of Fame inductee and SFWA Grand Master Robert Silverberg (ISFDB, Wikipedia, Science Fiction Encyclopedia) & Australian author Damien Broderick (ISFDB, Wikipedia, Science Fiction Encyclopedia), is a mini-compilation in Silverberg's Born with the Dead science fiction novella setting which explored the potential of the revived dead altering in their new lives as they revisit their memories, this reprint pairing the original with a new follow-up novella which further explores the concept, free courtesy of publisher Phoenix Pick Press.

This is their featured Free Book of the Month selection for August, and was also previously offered free in 2014. The original novella (Wikipedia), which appeared in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1974, is a double Nebula and Locus Award winner, and there's also a new introductory essay written by Silverberg.

“Born With the Dead” (the novella) was nominated for every major science fiction award when it was originally published in 1974, winning the Nebula and Locus awards.

The story describes a future in which the dead can be "re-kindled" back to a new form of life. While they remember their pasts thought, their personalities are subtly shifted and the ordinary concerns and feelings of their original life no longer concern them.

The author now revisits the classic story with Australian author Damien Broderick. Broderick uses Robert Silverberg’s original novella as a starting point for a brilliant leap into the far future, widening the scope and tenor of the original story by revisiting some of its subtler implications.
